Kim Petras is a German singer and songwriter based in Los Angeles. She first gained international attention due to her early gender transition and subsequent media coverage as a teenager. She released her debut EP, "One Piece of Tape", in 2011 and later worked as a songwriter for artists including Fergie, JoJo, Skylar Stecker, and Twice. Her debut single, "I Don't Want It at All", was released in August 2017, followed by "Heart to Break" in 2018, which reached number 52 on Billboard's Dance Club Songs chart. She later released the EPs "Turn Off the Light, Vol. 1" (2018), "Clarity" (2019), and "Slut Pop" (2022), along with multiple singles including "How It's Done" (2019), which appeared on the soundtrack of "Charlie's Angels", and "Broken Glass" (2020), which reached number 23 on Billboard's Dance/Electronic Songs chart.
In 2021, Petras signed to a Republic Records imprint and became the first openly transgender performer to appear at the MTV Video Music Awards, MTV Europe Music Awards, and Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. In 2022, she released the EP "Slut Pop", which included "Throat Goat", a track that went viral in 2023 after a sign language interpretation at Sydney WorldPride gained attention. That same year, she featured on Sam Smith's single "Unholy", which reached number one in multiple countries, including the United States on the Billboard Hot 100, and won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. This made Petras the first openly transgender woman to achieve both a number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100 and a Grammy in that category.
Following "Unholy", she released "Alone" featuring Nicki Minaj, which peaked at number 55 on the Billboard Hot 100, and her debut studio album "Feed the Beast" in 2023, which reached number 44 on the Billboard 200. She also released the EP "Slut Pop Miami" in 2024, and the album "Problématique" in 2023, which had initially been delayed before a revised version was eventually released. In 2026, she released the album "Detour" following her departure from Republic Records after reported disagreements regarding its release.
Petras has also collaborated on tracks such as "Unlock It" with Charli XCX and "Reminds Me" (2020), both of which gained renewed attention through covers and viral trends. Her music has appeared in films and television series including "The Bitch Who Stole Christmas" (2021), "Bridesman" (2022), "The Lead Up" (2022), and "This Is Me... Now: A Love Story" (2024). She has also been involved in remixes and collaborations with artists such as K/DA, Kygo, David Guetta, and Katy Perry. Throughout her career, she has faced criticism for working with producer Dr. Luke.
Petras was born on 27 August 1992 in Uckerath, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, and has two older sisters. Her mother is a dancer and her father is an architect. She began identifying as female at a very young age and started hormone therapy at age 12. She also began writing music in her early teens, teaching herself English through online media and producing early songs using GarageBand. During adolescence, she appeared in German media discussing her gender transition and seeking access to gender-affirming surgery at an early age, which drew international attention at the time.
While still in school, Petras visited recording studios and produced demo material, leading to a publishing deal with Universal Music Germany during her teenage years. She later moved to Los Angeles at age 19, where she initially lived in the garage of a music producer while continuing to develop her songwriting career. During this period, she wrote material for other artists and secured a publishing deal with Prescription Songs in 2016. She later founded her own imprint, Bunhead Records, and continued to release her own music independently before signing with a major label in 2021.
