Kitchen Hips is the moniker of songwriter and folk musician, Aerienne Russell. Alongside her beau Evan Hemsley, Russell makes melodious music steeped in hominess, heartache, and nostalgic whimsy. With a base of banjo, wondrous whistling and plenty of puns (one daisy I was lazy and I daffo-dilly-dallyed, but I rose up, and made things happen), Kitchen Hips takes on the pangs of life and lonesome with a spoonful of sugar and a hint of kitsch. As a self-taught musician with deep family roots in Appalachia, her music speaks to a simpler time, like the songs of The Carter Family and Connie Converse with a pinch of Lee Hazelwood’s wry wit. Often accompanied by an eclectic blend of woodwinds and the hiss of a careworn cassette tape, Kitchen Hips’ recordings recall a small town bandstand in the days of old. All the same, her live shows are hypnotic, “fun and lively”; from sing-a-longs to serenades, she keeps the audience swaying and their hearts swooning. Since 2012, Kitchen Hips has been working to establish herself as both a local and national folk artist. In 2015, she successfully booked and completed two regional tours of the United States, covering the Midwest, South, and West Coast, including a stop at the legendary Daytrotter studios, where her song “Let’s Let Go” was named in the Top 250 songs of the year. In Los Angeles, she has shared bills with notable names like Southern Culture on the Skids and Charlie Parr. She was selected as artist-in-residence for the Spring Creek Project’s Residency for the Written Word in 2013, where she wrote and recorded the album, Recordings from Shotpouch Creek. ​ With three self-releases under her belt and a batch of new recordings, Kitchen Hips is in search of the right label to release their next album, Lonely Weekend. Currently, she is living in Los Angeles, performing locally and writing new material.
