In 2006, Felipe Calderón deployed thousands of troops to combat the most powerful drug cartels in Mexico. tijuana, like most tourist-laden cities in the north of the country, transformed into a war-zone. With body counts escalating into the hundreds, the town's nightlife soon dwindled. As panic-stricken party-goers abandoned the scene, its once booming rave culture became all but extinct.
Los Macuanos, a trio comprised of Moises López, Moises Horta and Reuben Torres, belong to a generation of producers that came of age in this rapidly-changing climate. like their contemporaries, their productions echo a once hedonistic lifestyle, taking cues from the rave styles of the era, yet displaying a decidedly more introspective approach. the precarious state of the country at the time has no doubt informed the brooding tone of their music, which has lead publications like NPR to describe their sound as "dark" and "almost apocalyptic."
The group carries disparate influences, which range from minimal techno and bass music, to more experimental styles like glitch, noise and no wave, while adhering to a strict discourse on
traditional mexican sounds. Nonetheless, their distinct sound, as well as their unparalleled live performances, prove them to be a wholly original incarnation of the new vanguard in Mexican electronic music.
