Using experimental soundscaping, minimalist grooves, elements of progressive rock and an affinity for the conventional, Lowmen Markos combine thier original approach and influences into incredibly dynamic live shows and intricate albums.
The band originated in the Spring of 2009 consisting of guitarist Nathan Swain and drummer Scott Helgason. The long time friends had collaborated previously on more traditional projects but started Lowmen Markos as an improvised/experimental outlet in the basement of Nathan’s tenement. They enlisted Scott’s brother, Brendon Helgason to play bass and keys and began writing, rehearsing, and performing.
In winter of 2010, the band picked up ex-Ever Changing Sky guitarist Steven Andrea solidifiying the core line-up.
Quickly after the expansion Lowmen Markos released their first EP recorded by Sunny Day Real Estate producer Greg Williamson. The record was received well by fans and press, calling it a sprawling and impressive debut. Deliberately short-run, the album was sold by Luckyhorse Industries and overseas in Japan and France before going out of print in 2011. After numerous festivals and headline shows in Seattle and the northwest, Lowmen Markos returned to the studio to record their next two releases. This time with engineer Ben Jenkins. The ominous four track opus Flames and the delicately sentimental Drawing Light were recorded the same month in late 2011 for release in 2012.
