Malevolent Creation is an American death metal band formed in Buffalo, New York in 1987 and later based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The original lineup consisted of guitarists Phil Fasciana and Jim Nickles and vocalist Bret Hoffmann, with bassist Jason Blachowicz and drummer Dennis Kubas joining the following year. Fasciana is the only founding member to have remained in the band continuously.
In 1988, the band relocated to Florida and became part of the emerging local death metal scene. After releasing several demo recordings, they signed with Roadrunner Records. Their debut album, "The Ten Commandments", was released in 1991 and is often cited as part of the early development of Florida death metal alongside bands such as Obituary and Death.
The band's lineup changed frequently during the early 1990s. After their debut, guitarist Jon Rubin and drummer Mark Simpson were replaced by Rob Barrett and Alex Marquez. The band toured in 1992 with acts including Cannibal Corpse, Obituary, and Agnostic Front. That same year, they released their second album, "Retribution". In 1993, they released "Stillborn", during which Rubin returned and Barrett left. Around this period, Hoffmann departed and Blachowicz assumed vocal duties while continuing on bass. Marquez also left, and Dave Culross joined as drummer.
The album "Eternal" was recorded with a lineup including Blachowicz, Rubin, Fasciana, and Culross. Following this release, Derek Roddy joined briefly on drums, and guitarist John Paul Soars also became part of the lineup for the 1997 album "In Cold Blood". After tensions within the band, Blachowicz and Roddy both left.
Fasciana subsequently reassembled the lineup, bringing back Hoffmann, Barrett, and Culross, with Gordon Simms on bass. This configuration recorded "The Fine Art of Murder" (1998), which received a positive reception in parts of the metal press. The follow-up album, "Envenomed" (2000), was recorded with producer Jeremy Staska. A remastered version titled "Envenomed II" was also released.
Hoffmann later left again, and the band continued with various lineup changes, including Kyle Simons and drummer Justin DiPinto. During this period, Malevolent Creation toured with bands such as Marduk, Immolation, and Aborted. The album "The Will to Kill" was released in 2002, followed by "Warkult" in 2004, which featured the return of Dave Culross on drums. In 2007, the band released "Doomsday X", which included contributions from multiple returning members and a guest appearance by Mick Thomson of Slipknot.
In 2010, the band signed a management deal with Extreme Management Group and began recording their eleventh album, "Invidious Dominion", which was released later that year through Nuclear Blast. In 2015, they released their twelfth studio album, "Dead Man's Path", under Century Media Records.
In 2016, reports indicated that the band had effectively disbanded following tour cancellations and the departure of Jason Blachowicz, although Phil Fasciana continued to operate the project. The band reformed with a new lineup in 2017. Bret Hoffmann died in 2018 at the age of 51.
The thirteenth studio album, "The 13th Beast", was released in 2019 with a new lineup including Josh Gibbs, Lee Wollenschlaeger, and Phillip Cancilla. In 2022, Deron Miller joined as guitarist and vocalist, and the band began work on their fourteenth album. Further lineup changes occurred in 2024, with Jesse Jolly joining on bass and later also taking over vocal duties after Miller's departure. Chris Cannella later joined as guitarist.
In 2025, Phil Fasciana was hospitalized with bacterial pneumonia and spent time in intensive care. Later that year, it was announced that Deron Miller would rejoin the band, with work planned to continue on the forthcoming fourteenth studio album, "Return Fire".
