The band has released eight studio albums along with several other releases.
Their 2002 debut album, "Remission", received critical acclaim for its distinctive sound. The second album, "Leviathan", is a concept album based on the novel "Moby-Dick" by Herman Melville and was awarded "Album of the Year" in 2004 by Revolver, Kerrang! and Terrorizer magazines. From their third album, "Blood Mountain" (2006), the song "Colony of Birchmen" was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 2007. Subsequent albums include "Crack the Skye" (2009) and "The Hunter" (2011), which debuted at number 10 on the Billboard 200 and features the song "Curl of the Burl", nominated for a Grammy for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance in 2012.
"Once More 'Round the Sun" (2014) peaked at number six on the Billboard 200 and includes the Grammy-nominated song "High Road". The seventh album, "Emperor of Sand" (2017), features "Show Yourself", the band’s most commercially successful song, reaching number four on the US Billboard Mainstream Rock Songs chart. The album’s opening track, "Sultan's Curse", earned Mastodon their first Grammy award, and the album was also nominated for Best Rock Album. Their most recent album, "Hushed and Grim", was released in 2021.
Brent Hinds left the band in March 2025 and died five months later in a motorcycle accident in Atlanta, Georgia. In 2016, Loudwire staff ranked Mastodon as the 20th-best metal band of all time.
