Meshuggah is known for its innovative approach to metal, featuring complex polymetered song structures and polyrhythms. They gained recognition as a major act in the extreme underground music scene, developed a cult following, and influenced numerous modern metal bands. Rolling Stone has named them one of the ten most important hard rock and heavy metal bands, while Alternative Press has described them as the most important band in metal. The band has also been cited as a key inspiration for the djent subgenre in the late 2000s.
Meshuggah received nominations for two Swedish Grammis Awards for their albums "Catch Thirtythree" and "obZen" in 2006 and 2009, respectively. In 2018, they were nominated for a Grammy Award for "Clockworks" in the Best Metal Performance category. The band has performed at international festivals such as Ozzfest and Download and has conducted several tours, including the obZen world tour from 2008 to 2010 and the "Ophidian Trek."
