As a recording project, Methyl Ethel is the solo project of Jake Webb. For live performances, Webb is accompanied by a band whose core members have included bassist Thom Stewart and drummer Chris Wright. Webb previously fronted the band Sugarpuss.
In March 2013, Methyl Ethel released its debut extended play, "Guts", followed by "Teeth" in November 2013.

In March 2013, Methyl Ethel released its debut extended play, "Guts", followed by "Teeth" in November 2013. In June 2015, the project released its debut studio album, "Oh Inhuman Spectacle".
In March 2017, Methyl Ethel released its second studio album, "Everything Is Forgotten", which was co-produced by James Ford. The album received positive reviews from publications including NME and reached number 16 on the ARIA Albums Chart. Methyl Ethel also performed as a support act for artists including Pond.
In April 2017, Methyl Ethel released a limited-edition double A-side 12-inch single, "Architecture Lecture"/"Lagotto Romagnolo", featuring songs from its debut extended plays, for Record Store Day.
On 26 September 2018, Methyl Ethel released the single "Scream Whole", its first new music in more than a year, and announced a series of international tour dates.
In February 2019, Methyl Ethel released its third studio album, "Triage", which reached number 11 on the ARIA Albums Chart.
In February 2020, Methyl Ethel released "Majestic AF", the lead single from the extended play "Hurts to Laugh", which was released on 10 April 2020. The EP consists of songs that had not been included on "Triage".
In April 2021, Methyl Ethel released "Neon Cheap", its first single on Future Classic. The single "Matters" followed in September.
In January 2022, Methyl Ethel released the single "Proof", a collaboration with Stella Donnelly, and announced its fourth studio album, "Are You Haunted?".
In July 2022, Methyl Ethel released the standalone single "Talk Louder" ahead of an appearance at Splendour in the Grass.
