Monoliths are a sludge/doom/drone metal band from Nottingham, England, formed in 2015. The trio consists of Henry on drums, Tanya on bass and vocals, and Tobin on guitar and vocals. Built around a simple philosophy of being heavy and slow, Monoliths strip their music down to colossal riffs, crushing low-end, feedback, distortion and sustained drones. Their sound draws from the darker and more abrasive traditions of sludge and doom while embracing the hypnotic repetition and immersive weight of drone metal. The band's music is deliberately unhurried and monolithic, allowing riffs to develop through layers of distortion, feedback and reverberation rather than relying on speed or technical complexity. The result is a dense, meditative and crushing soundscape that feels less like a collection of conventional songs and more like a slow descent into an abyss. Monoliths released their self-titled debut full-length in July 2016 through Dry Cough Records in the UK and Crown and Throne Ltd. in the United States. Recorded at Stuck on a Name Studios in Nottingham and mastered by James Plotkin, the two-track, 33-minute album established the band's uncompromising approach to drone-infused sludge and doom.
