Nickelback is a Canadian rock band formed in 1995 in Hanna, Alberta. The band's line-up consists of lead vocalist and lead guitarist Chad Kroeger, rhythm guitarist, keyboardist and backing vocalist Ryan Peake, bassist Mike Kroeger, and drummer Daniel Adair. Several drummers were members of the band between its formation and Adair's arrival in 2005.
The band signed with Roadrunner Records in 1999 and achieved mainstream commercial success with the 2001 single "How You Remind Me", which reached number one in both Canada and the United States. Its parent album, "Silver Side Up" (2001), became a multi-platinum release. The follow-up album, "The Long Road" (2003), produced several successful singles, including "Someday". Nickelback's fifth studio album, "All the Right Reasons" (2005), became the band's best-selling release and generated a number of internationally successful singles, including "Photograph", "Far Away", and "Rockstar". Subsequent studio albums include "Dark Horse" (2008), "Here and Now" (2011), "No Fixed Address" (2014), "Feed the Machine" (2017), and "Get Rollin'" (2022).
Nickelback is among the most commercially successful Canadian rock bands, with worldwide album sales exceeding 50 million copies. In 2009, Billboard ranked the band as the most successful rock group of the 2000s decade and the seventh most successful artist overall during that period. In 2023, Nickelback was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.
The band originated in the early 1990s as a cover band called Village Idiot, formed by brothers Chad and Mike Kroeger, along with their cousin Brandon Kroeger and Ryan Peake. The group later adopted the name Nickelback, derived from a phrase Mike Kroeger frequently used while working at a coffee shop: "Here's your nickel back." Early performances consisted largely of cover versions of songs by bands such as Led Zeppelin and Metallica. The band recorded its first release, the EP "Hesher", in 1996, followed later that year by its debut studio album, "Curb".
Brandon Kroeger left the band in 1997 and was briefly replaced by Mitch Guindon. In 1998, Ryan Vikedal joined as drummer. Nickelback attracted the attention of Roadrunner Records through the independently released material and signed recording contracts with Roadrunner Records and EMI in 1999.
"The State" was released in 2000 in North America and in 2001 in Europe. The album produced the singles "Old Enough", "Worthy to Say", "Leader of Men", and "Breathe". It became the band's first release to achieve gold certification and later attained platinum status. The album also marked Nickelback's first appearance on the Billboard 200 chart.
For the recording of "Silver Side Up", Nickelback worked with producer Rick Parashar. Released on 11 September 2001, the album reached number one in Canada and number two on the Billboard 200. Its lead single, "How You Remind Me", became the band's breakthrough hit and was one of the most successful songs of 2002. Additional singles from the album included "Too Bad" and "Never Again".
In 2002, Chad Kroeger collaborated with Josey Scott on "Hero", a song featured in the film "Spider-Man". The same year, Nickelback released the concert DVD "Live at Home". During a performance at Portugal's Ilha do Ermal festival in August 2002, the band left the stage after objects were thrown from the audience.
Nickelback released "The Long Road" in 2003. Produced by Joey Moi, the album debuted in the top ten of the Billboard 200 and achieved multi-platinum certification. Its singles included "Someday", "Feelin' Way Too Damn Good", and "Figured You Out".
Following the completion of touring for "The Long Road", drummer Ryan Vikedal departed the band in 2005 and was replaced by Daniel Adair, previously of 3 Doors Down. Later that year, Nickelback released "All the Right Reasons", which reached number one on both the Billboard 200 and the Canadian Albums Chart. The album generated multiple successful singles, including "Photograph", "Savin' Me", "Far Away", "If Everyone Cared", and "Rockstar". Guest contributions included appearances by Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top and recordings featuring material by Dimebag Darrell of Pantera. The band undertook extensive international touring in support of the album.
In 2008, Nickelback signed a multi-album and touring agreement with Live Nation. Later that year, the band released "Dark Horse", produced by Robert John "Mutt" Lange. The album generated eight singles, including "Gotta Be Somebody", "If Today Was Your Last Day", "Burn It to the Ground", and "This Afternoon". The accompanying world tour ran from 2008 to 2010 and sold more than 1.6 million tickets. "Dark Horse" received strong commercial success and achieved multi-platinum certification, although critical reception was mixed.
Nickelback released "Here and Now" in November 2011. The album's lead singles were "Bottoms Up" and "When We Stand Together". The album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 and reached number one in Canada. The band supported the release with an international tour and later issued the compilation album "The Best of Nickelback Volume 1" in 2013.
The band's eighth studio album, "No Fixed Address", was released in 2014 through Republic Records. The singles included "Edge of a Revolution" and "What Are You Waiting For?". A planned tour in support of the album was partly postponed after Chad Kroeger underwent surgery for a vocal cord cyst.
In 2016, Nickelback released a cover version of Don Henley's "Dirty Laundry". The following year, the band signed with BMG Rights Management and released "Feed the Machine". The album was supported by a North American tour featuring Daughtry, Shaman's Harvest, and Cheap Trick.
During 2019 and 2021, members of the band discussed work on a tenth studio album. In 2020, Nickelback released a cover of "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" by The Charlie Daniels Band, featuring guitarist Dave Martone.
In 2022, the band announced and released "Get Rollin'". The album's lead single, "San Quentin", was followed by "Those Days". Nickelback supported the release with the "Get Rollin'" Tour, which took place across Canada and the United States in 2023.
In February 2026, Nickelback appeared on the single "Nightmare Tripping", the title track of the Don Broco album of the same name.
