Open Choir Fire is a three piece rock trio from Seattle WA, although none of its members are native to the Pacific Northwest. In fact, all three were raised in the deserts of Tucson and Santa Fe, growing up with the windswept sounds of Giant Sand, traditional mariachi from old Mexico, and the occasional country western twang. Of course, the core of OCF is true to the northwest legacy of grunge and indie rock music, but backgrounds peppered with a wide variety of experience and musical training has helped OCF achieve a rich, mature, and eclectic sound.
The music of OCF can best be described as an integration of the most successful elements inherent to great rock music. The band has concentrated on acheiving a lean and focused sound, relying most heavily on melody, style, and structure for the creative element. The instrumentation has thus far been straightforward and basic: guitar, bass, drums, two distortion pedals, and a vocalist. References to the Pixies and the Talking Heads are not uncommon, although in general, references are numerous and often contradictory. From the press OCF has received, it is clear that people have had a difficult time placing them in any single category other than rock music. Over the years their music has been labeled "neo-grunge", referred to as "rockin', quirky, and sweet" and been described as "a richly diverse collection of sounds and styles."
Up until their 2006 EP entitled “In Each Appropriate, Everlasting and Not” OCF had taken a more DIY approach, distributing home made recordings for free at shows, and relying on word of mouth promotion to reach new listeners. Since their 2006 release they have received high praise for their work, receiving a CMJ Sonicbids Spotlight Award in 2007, and winning round 3 of the Zig Zag Live Competition which positions them for a chance to play at the 2008 CMJ Music Marathon.
The band is currently working on their long awaited first full length album to be released in fall/winter of 2008.
