Out Like Pluto was formed in summer 2009 by lead singer Kari Tarr and drummer/producer Andy Tyra. Out Like Pluto was formed in summer 2009 by lead singer Kari Tarr and drummer/producer Andy Tyra. Highly adept at inventing totally falsified stories of rock star fame, the duo established the tone for the band's cart-before-the-horse approach to music making. Bassist Mike Van Wie was added to the roster shortly after the band produced its first demo, an early rendition of "Starring John Stamos," setting the precedent for the band's guitar-playing members to all be named Mike. Capitalizing on his fortuitous first name, Mike Pesce signed on as the band's lead guitarist, completing the lineup, and ensuring the band had a solid foundation for a string of microphone-related jokes.
The band spent six months producing recordings of original tracks as well as impeccable pop covers of some of history's most influential and revolutionary artists, like Miley Cyrus. The effort finally paid off in June 2010, when Out Like Pluto's do-it-yourself debut, 9th & Virginia, was released under the band's own label, along with a music video for its first single, "Papercut," filmed in a local downtown bar. 9th & Virginia invites the listener on a genre-hopping, fist-pumping, and sometimes literal jaunt through the bars, streets, and apartments of urban life in downtown Seattle, and of course, it offers plenty of sing-along-with-a-smile-on-your-face opportunities for a city that could use just a few more.
