Ozric Tentacles are an English instrumental rock band formed in Somerset in 1983. Their music incorporates elements of psychedelic rock, progressive rock, space rock, jazz fusion, electronic music, dub, world music and ambient music. The band have released more than 30 albums and have sold over one million records worldwide while remaining independent of major record labels. Throughout numerous line-up changes, co-founder and guitarist Ed Wynne has remained the group's only constant member.
The band originated at the Stonehenge Free Festival in 1983. Ed and Roly Wynne, drummer Nick "Tig" Van Gelder, bassist Eddie Myer and keyboardist Joie Hinton performed together under the name Bolshem People before adopting the name Ozric Tentacles. According to band accounts, the name emerged from a humorous discussion about fictional breakfast cereals. References to breakfast cereals subsequently appeared in several album titles and cover designs.
During the 1980s, Ozric Tentacles became associated with the United Kingdom's free festival circuit. Their early reputation was largely built through live performances and the circulation of unofficial cassette recordings. The band's line-up was highly fluid, with performances often involving different combinations of musicians. Members also frequently participated in side projects and collaborations outside the group.
In 1984, guitarist Gavin Griffiths left the band and later formed The Ulluators with keyboardist Joie Hinton. The following year, Ozric Tentacles released their first official cassette, "Erpsongs", followed by "Tantric Obstacles". Many of the early recordings were produced by Ed Wynne, who often performed multiple instrumental parts. Recording took place using home studio equipment, with some tracks featuring drum machines due to practical limitations.
Growing interest in the band's music led to increased demand for recordings. In response, they released the live compilation cassette "Live Ethereal Cereal", which featured performances recorded between 1985 and 1986. During this period, their sound expanded beyond its original psychedelic rock foundation to incorporate stronger influences from space rock, reggae and world music. These developments were reflected on the 1986 cassette release "There Is Nothing". Improved recording technology also contributed to a more elaborate production style.
Further personnel changes occurred in the late 1980s. Performer "Jumping" John Egan joined the band, while keyboardist Tom Brooks departed in 1987. Ed Wynne increasingly assumed keyboard responsibilities and developed his synthesiser skills, partly influenced by his work with the side project Nodens Ictus. In 1988, the band released "Sliding Gliding Worlds". Shortly afterwards, drummer Nick Van Gelder left and was replaced by Merv Pepler. The final cassette-era release, "The Bits Between the Bits" (1989), compiled previously unreleased material recorded between 1985 and 1989.
In 1989, Ozric Tentacles founded their own record label, Dovetail Records, and released "Pungent Effulgent", initially on vinyl and later on CD. Around the same time, the band gained wider recognition, including a performance with singer-songwriter Donovan at the Glastonbury Festival. "Erpland" followed in 1990. The single "Sploosh!", from the album "Strangeitude", reached number one on the UK Indie Chart.
In the early 1990s, the band established a recording facility known as The Mill, converted from a former water mill. Their 1993 album "Jurassic Shift" reached the UK Top 20 and also achieved number one on the UK Indie Chart.
Despite continuing line-up changes, Ozric Tentacles maintained a consistent musical identity and remained active as both a recording and touring act throughout the 1990s and 2000s. Their live performances became known for combining music with elaborate visual effects, including lighting displays and projections.
In June 2012, the home and studio of Ed and Brandi Wynne in Colorado were destroyed by wildfires while the band was on tour. The fire resulted in the loss of archival material, recording equipment and musical instruments. Following the disaster, the band appealed to supporters for assistance in rebuilding their archive.
During 2021 and 2022, Ed Wynne and Silas Neptune performed a series of UK concerts under the name Ozric Electronic. In late 2022, the band, then consisting of Ed Wynne, Silas Neptune, Saskia Maxwell, Pat Garvey and Corey Wallace, toured with Gong. Additional tours with Gong followed in 2023, and in late 2024 they began a co-headline UK tour with The Orb.
On 14 January 2022, Ozric Tentacles released the box set "Travelling the Great Circle", which collected all studio albums from "Pungent Effulgent" to "Jurassic Shift" along with additional material. A second box set, "Trees of Eternity (1994-2000)", was released on 16 December 2022 and covered recordings from "Arborescence" through "The Hidden Step". A third collection, "Through the Magick Valley", was released on 7 November 2025 and included material from "Live at the Pongmaster's Ball" to "Technicians of the Sacred", together with concert footage and a documentary.
