Phoebe Lucille Bridgers (born August 17, 1994) is an American singer-songwriter and record producer. Her music is primarily associated with indie folk and incorporates acoustic instrumentation, electronic production, and introspective lyrical themes. She has received multiple Grammy Awards and nominations throughout her career. Bridgers began performing music at a young age and was involved in several bands during her teenage years, including Sloppy Jane. She released her debut solo album, "Stranger in the Alps", in 2017. The album received positive critical reception and established her as a prominent figure in contemporary indie music. Her second studio album, "Punisher", was released in 2020 and also received widespread acclaim. In 2018, Bridgers formed the indie supergroup Boygenius with Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus. The group released the EP "Boygenius" later that year, followed by the studio album "The Record" and the EP "The Rest" in 2023. Bridgers was also a member of Better Oblivion Community Center, a collaboration with Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes, which released a self-titled album in 2019. Throughout her career, Bridgers has collaborated with numerous artists, including Taylor Swift, Matty Healy of The 1975, The Killers, Muna, SZA, Kid Cudi, Christian Lee Hutson, Shame, and The National. Her mother worked in real estate and stand-up comedy, while her father worked as a film and television set builder. She has a younger brother, Jackson. After her parents divorced, she continued living primarily in Pasadena and also spent part of her childhood in Ukiah, California. As a child, she performed music at the Pasadena Farmers Market and began playing guitar at approximately 13 years old. She attended Sequoyah School and later studied vocal jazz at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts. Although she was accepted into Berklee College of Music, she left shortly after orientation. During the early 2010s, Bridgers performed as a solo artist in Los Angeles and played in several local bands, including Einstein's Dirty Secret and Sloppy Jane. Producer Tony Berg later began collaborating with her on her debut album. Around the same period, she met singer-songwriter Ryan Adams, who released her EP "Killer" through his PAX AM label. In 2016, she toured as a supporting act for Julien Baker. In 2017, Bridgers released the single "Smoke Signals" and toured with Conor Oberst in Europe. She signed with the independent record label Dead Oceans later that year. Her debut album, "Stranger in the Alps", was released in September 2017 and featured contributions from Oberst and producer Mike Mogis. To promote the album, she appeared on programs including "CBS This Morning" and NPR's "Tiny Desk Concerts". Songs from the album were later featured in several television series. Bridgers has frequently collaborated with other musicians and has appeared on recordings by artists such as Lord Huron, Fiona Apple, Matt Berninger, Andrew Bird, Manchester Orchestra, The 1975, Maggie Rogers, Kid Cudi, Taylor Swift, and SZA. In 2018, Bridgers formed Boygenius with Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus. The group released several singles followed by the EP "Boygenius" in October 2018. The project received positive reviews and was followed by a U.S. tour and several televised performances. Later that year, Bridgers released a Spotify Singles recording that included performances of "Scott Street" and a cover of The Cure's "Friday I'm in Love". In January 2019, she and Conor Oberst announced the formation of Better Oblivion Community Center and released a self-titled album through Dead Oceans. In 2020, Bridgers released the singles "Garden Song" and "Kyoto" in advance of her second studio album, "Punisher". During the same period, she collaborated with The 1975 on the song "Jesus Christ 2005 God Bless America" and contributed to several tracks on the album "Notes on a Conditional Form". "Punisher" was released in June 2020 and received widespread critical acclaim. The album included the single "I Know the End". Bridgers also produced Christian Lee Hutson's album "Beginners" that year. In 2020, Bridgers founded Saddest Factory, an imprint of Dead Oceans. She also released several charity singles and cover songs, including a version of "Iris" by Goo Goo Dolls with Maggie Rogers, and "If We Make It Through December" by Merle Haggard. At the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards, Bridgers received nominations for Best New Artist, Best Rock Performance, Best Rock Song, and Best Alternative Music Album. In late 2020, she appeared on Kid Cudi's song "Lovin Me" from the album "Man on the Moon III: The Chosen". In 2021, Bridgers appeared as a musical guest on "Saturday Night Live", performing "Kyoto" and "I Know the End". She later released additional Spotify Singles recordings, including covers and alternate versions of her songs. During the same year, she collaborated with The Killers, Lorde, Muna, Noah Gundersen, and Taylor Swift. Her appearance on Swift's "Nothing New", from "Red (Taylor's Version)", marked her first entry on the Billboard Hot 100. She also released several cover songs for charitable causes. In 2022, Bridgers released "Sidelines" for the television adaptation of "Conversations with Friends". She also contributed music to the soundtrack of "Minions: The Rise of Gru" and appeared on recordings by Marcus Mumford and SZA. Her collaboration with SZA on "Ghost in the Machine", from the album "SOS", earned her a Grammy Award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. During the same period, she was announced as part of the cast of the film "I Saw the TV Glow" and served as an opening act on selected dates of Taylor Swift's "The Eras Tour". In 2023, Boygenius reunited and released the album "The Record" along with several singles, including "$20", "True Blue", and "Emily I'm Sorry". Bridgers also collaborated again with The National on tracks from the albums "First Two Pages of Frankenstein" and "Laugh Track". In February 2024, Boygenius announced an indefinite hiatus. At the 66th Annual Grammy Awards, Bridgers received several awards for her work with Boygenius and for her collaboration with SZA. Following the ceremony, she announced plans to take a break from public activities for the remainder of 2024, which continued into 2025. In May 2026, Bridgers returned to live performances with a series of surprise concerts in Roswell, New Mexico, Lubbock, Texas, and Little Rock, Arkansas. Attendees and media reports indicated that she performed previously unreleased material during the shows.
