There are at least three bands that share this name:
1) Plateau (stylized as PlatEAU) started as a project between cEvin Key (of Skinny Puppy, Download) and Phil Western (sound engineer, producer and songwriter for Download) for when they got arrested for the possession of marijuana and they decided to make a band that was for the legalisation of said drug. The music is thematically similar to Download's but leans to a more psychedelic direction, influenced by house and techno music.

The music is thematically similar to Download's but leans to a more psychedelic direction, influenced by house and techno music. Their first album Music for Grass Bars really showed this side, but upon their second release Spacecake it was obvious the music was following a closer direction to Download.
A third album Iceolator was released as part of the Subconscious 'Vault Series' which is composed of unreleased Plateau material throughout the years.
Their fourth is a double LP featuring new material, Kushbush, alongside the combination of Music for Grass Bars with Dutch Flowers. Their fifth album, Gort Spacebar, was released in 2009 as part of the "Beyond the Vault" series on Subconscious.
2) Alternative rock band from Poland, currently signed to EMI Music Polska, recently best known for their collaboration with a popular 90s' polish singer, Renata Przemyk, and spelled P-l-a-t-e-a-u. Sometimes they will show up in searches for the electronic/Industrial band of the name 'platEAU', but note that the Polish band hasn't ever used that syntax. The band is one of the most often touring acts in Poland - over the course of 7 years, they performed more than 300 times in Europe. The most recent tour, named 'Igorek Tour', referencing their cover of a S-kaP song is a spectacular array of shows, merging a normal gig with a circus performance. That idea is taken from their 2007 album, Mistrz Tupetu i Jego Bezczelny Cyrk, a concept album composed as an ironic circus show, subtly ridiculing the actual state of popculture and showbusiness in Poland.
Their new album, released in 2009 is "Krótka Wiadomosc Tekstowa".
3) Another Slovenian alternative indie band shares this name. They're called Plateau Družina on YouTube.
