Fiery spirit, bittersweet vulnerability, pangs of cool attitude and the everything in between. With a range of emotion and dynamic that some have compared to Nirvana, Song of the Siren is mesmerizing like the mythical sirens who seduced sailors with their voices, and piercing like the wailing sirens atop police cars.
When Song of the Siren front woman, Isul Kim, moved to San Francisco in 2004 (in the comfy cradle of a Harvard degree and a job) a pro musician looking to develop new talent showed up in her living room, urging Isul to listen to the strong, seductive call of music. The next day, Isul set out on a fast, hard path into music. Touring solo across the country with her acoustic guitar, Isul picked up a knack for composing delicious pop songs. Through her songwriting, Isul confronts her obsessions with her multiple personalities and inescapable ghosts with stories drawn from her upbringing in New York City.
Upon returning from the solo acoustic tour circuit, Isul picked up her first electric guitar (a Gibson ES335) and set out to start a rock band. After a rough journey in search of the best musicians for the job, Song of the Siren was founded in Summer 2007 and began recording its first record, due for release in Spring 2008. With the help of Eric Alonzo on bass and Anthony Petrocchi on drums, SoS's sound unraveled itself in the studio as Isul's songs transformed and were recorded with producer Garry Ventura, engineer Justin Phelps (Cake, Mars Volta) at San Francisco's Tiny Telephone Studios (Death Cab, Spoon) and Hyde Street Studios (Satriani, CCR). Shortly after SoS left the studio, guitarist Steve Muscatell was introduced to the group and signed on in Winter 2007 to join their next steps in bringing these songs to life on stages around the world.
Song of the Siren emerges with a seducing, new sound that resonates to the frequencies of alternative rock and pop - heavy and edgy at the bottom, uplifting and honest at the top. Listeners are mesmerized by the drum beats that go from tribal to delicate, while unique bass lines and blues /punk guitar riffs tie together with a playful voice that draws comparisons to an eclectic mix of singers from Rickie Lee Jones to Maynard James Keenan. SoS's first striking efforts in music create a timeless sensation spanning the many emotions that we all feel. Listening to the call of Song of the Siren is simply to feel everything that you know.
