Soul Asylum is an American rock band formed in 1981 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Their 1993 hit "Runaway Train" won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Song.
The band was originally known as Loud Fast Rules and consisted of Dave Pirner, Dan Murphy, Karl Mueller, and Pat Morley. They adopted the name Soul Asylum in 1983, and Morley was replaced by Grant Young in 1984.
Soul Asylum released three albums with Twin/Tone Records and two with A&M Records before achieving significant commercial success.

Soul Asylum released three albums with Twin/Tone Records and two with A&M Records before achieving significant commercial success. In 1992, the band released the triple-platinum album "Grave Dancers Union," which featured "Runaway Train." They performed at the inauguration of President Bill Clinton in early 1993. Their 1995 album "Let Your Dim Light Shine" also achieved platinum status. In 1998, the band released "Candy from a Stranger." Four additional albums followed over the next 15 years. Their more recent releases include "Hurry Up and Wait" from 2020, their twelfth studio album, and "Slowly But Shirley" from 2024, their thirteenth.
Karl Mueller was diagnosed with cancer in 2004, and the band organized a benefit concert to support him. He died in 2005.
