Sound People is the collaborative banner of Paul Dickow (Strategy) and Jesse Johnson (GULLS), and while the two might enjoy a cup of tea together, they also manage to crank out some really rather endearing electronic dub. The pair’s distinct sense of engineering is the key part of ‘Teatime’ and over five wordless tunes they exhibit a real humanity in their use of tape-recorded percussion, trumpets and Dickow’s patented electronic pulses. The dubwise focus of Strategy is still present, but is re-contextualized amongst a fog of twisted jazz and near-gamelan soundscapes. At times you’d be hard pushed to hear the electronic sounds; the two cover their steps well and everything is coated in a delicious, milky noise. Think of ‘Teatime’ as ambient-not-ambient – background noises brought right up front and electronic dub that’s proud not to be too up-front or rooted in UK bass music. At the end of the day it’d go well with a nice cup of tea, and what more can you ask than that? Recommended.
