Born in Stockton, California, singer/songwriter/guitarist Christopher Scott Kannberg (aka Spiral Stairs) established himself in the early '90s as the guitar player (and occasional songwriter) for highly influential indie rock outfit Pavement. In 1998, Kannberg started his own label, Pray for Mojo (later renamed Amazing Grease), and formed the Preston School of Industry with drummer Andrew Borger and bassist Jon Erickson, both of whom had previously played with Amazing Grease recording artists, the Moore Brothers. The band released a handful of solid albums and appeared on Kannberg's first official Matador Records solo release under the Spiral Stairs moniker, 2009's Real Feel. The following year, Kannberg joined the rest of Pavement for a reunion tour, before moving to Brisbane, Australia with his wife to start a family. Returning to Los Angles a few years later, Kannberg had planned recording sessions with fellow Preston School of Industry members to record a new Spiral Stairs release in 2015. A month before the sessions were due to start, former Posies drummer and PSI member Darius Minwalla passed away. Taking stock of the situation and the shock of his sudden passing, Kannberg hooked up with singer/songwriter Kelley Stoltz to reassess the album. With the record taking a more emotional direction than previously conceived, Kannberg entered the studios with Matt Harris on bass and Broken Social Scene's Justin Peroff on drum duties. The resulting Doris & the Daggers -- which featured guest spots from the likes of Broken Social Scene's Kevin Drew and the National's Matt Berninger -- was released at the beginning of 2017. He returned at the start of 2019 with the single "Hyp-No-Tized," the first song pulled from the full-length We Wanna Be Hyp-No-Tized
