standing 8 was formed in november of 1996, in pickering, ontario canada.
at the time jesse played drums in a band called electrolux, but quit that band to devote himself fully to standing 8. we played our first show on valentines day, febuary 14th 1997, in ajax, ontario. we then played in oakville, ont. and it was obvious our style was very different from any other canadian bands around at the time. at that show, we were invited to perform live on CHRY 105.5 FM.
we played numerous other shows and played in quebec and in columbus ohio at the more than music fest. in ohio, we met many people, including the kids who run eudora records, based in detroit, mi. within a month, there was an agreement to do a 12" with eudora records for the end of that year. over time it was decided that it should be a 7" instead because it would enable the record to be released earlier. eudora records then booked a 3 day tour of michigan for us to promote the band and create interest in the upcoming 7".
one month before the tour robin young joined the band to play keyboards and played her first show in grandhaven, MI.
after the 3 day tour, we decided to not play any shows and work on new songs for the 7". mike then moved to toronto and so did robin. mike was busy at university and was very seldom able to attend practice, so the inital decision was to work on the new songs without him and then the bass lines could be added later. after completion of 4 new songs without a bass player, we found that the bass lines that the keyboard could play were much lower and deeper than a bass guitar could and so we decided to continue without mike.
sean announced at the beginning of 1998 that he would be moving to rosseau, ont. at the end of july (rosseau is 2 hours north of pickering) and so we figured that we would disband when that happened.
we then made a deal with bates records from sweden to do a split 10" picturedisc with this robot kills from detroit, mi. in the midst of making that deal, the possibility arose of touring europe in support of the record. we decided that the oppurtunity was too good to pass up and so we decided to stay together until the middle of the summer of 1999.
then in late 1998, we decided that we needed a singer. we talked about a bunch of different people, but the perfect choice was our long time friend, scott henderson.
we played 2 shows with scott in canada before going to europe. europe was where we truly became a band. we had never played as well before and even on borrowed equipment, we had never sounded so good.
after we came back from the euro tour sean sold all his equipment to pay rent, robin and jesse are still playing with black cat #13 and have a bunch of records coming out, mark went back to work at eatons, scott has been busy acting and brian is still kicking it in the tamil section of cabbagetown.
