myspace: About Strix Vega
Arcata, California's Strix Vega is a three-piece band that has been playing together since 2004. Since forming, Strix Vega has played a diverse assortment of venues throughout Oregon and the Northern California Coast. The sound created by Strix Vega is one that is a fusion of the musical tastes and training of each musician. Begell, brought up on folk records as a child, emulates the sounds of his childhood heroes through his guitar, harmonica, and his expressive and often times, gently mournful vocals. Godwin, a jazz trained drummer and bass player, brings a sense of tasteful simplicity and dynamics to the group. Classically trained in music theory, Powell infuses 20th century compositional techniques into the band's sound as well as a strong jazz influence through his fretless bass and piano playing. The influences often mentioned by each member include (but are not limited to); Neil Young; Gillian Welch; Grant Lee Buffalo; Pink Floyd; The Doors; The Shins; Herbie Hancock; The Cannonball Adderly Quintet (1969); Max Roach; and Philly Joe Jones. The band's versatility is expressed through their two different live sets. In smaller, more intimate settings, the band plays a semi-acoustic improvisational set, built off of dynamic shifts and rolling changes. For larger halls, the group plays a louder, more electric set with energy bubbling up to the surface, engaging the audience in an exciting musical exchange.
