Telephone And Telegraph have described themselves as "Thrash/Country/Rock". On the L.A. band's first full length, "North South East West", songs like "Old Heartache" and "Long Sleeves Rolled Up" showcase bouncing basslines and classic chord progressions that could be at home on the best loved of Neil Young's records, but are still fresh enough for those who dig any of Wilco's catalog. Other tracks like "Sea Legs" or "All The Kids Are Gonna Hate Us" bring out barroom brawling riffs that Against Me! or Hot Water Music fans would love.

"The Streets Roll" could've come from Mountain's "Climbing" LP, or it could be a lost Hold Steady b-side. T&T, though, have managed to avoid the trap of simply copying the artists that have influenced them. They have created an album full of songs that aren't simply "country/rock", "punk/country","thrash/twang" or whatever new genre one could create. The thrash is in the country, and the rock is in both of them. The stories unfolded on "North South East West" would be at home in Merle Haggard, Bruce Springsteen, or Lucero territory. Tales of adventure, love, heartbreak, alcohol, trainhopping, fighting in the streets, going to jail, hard work, no pay, dark alleys, sailing ships, flaming arrows, cold pistols, hangin' trees, and more, all told with an attention to detail that could stand alongside the most vivid Tom Waits lyric. It's there in all of the songs. T&T have produced an honest, straightforward album full of compelling tales, with enough rock for the rockers, a healthy dose of twang for the alt.country set, and all the energy and vitality needed to sustain a packed-to-the-gills, sweat-drenched, d.i.y. basement show in the middle of nowhere.
