The Dirty Commies Started in Eugene Oregon in the barren winter of 2009 while the members were all still in high school; The first “practice” took place in their banjo player Greg’s barn with an electric guitar an out of tune banjo with three strings, and a washboard, soon after they got together for an actual practice and began busking at street corners, farmers markets, and festivals. “We were really terrible when we first started busking” recalls Zach Bryson (rhythm guitar/ lead vocals), “I’m surprised we ever made any money.” But now, although they continue to busk, their playing shows whenever and wherever they can, and are planning a cross country tour this summer. For the first two years the band consisted of Zach Bryson on rhythm guitar and vocals, Govi Phalen on lead guitar, Greg Thompson (of Thompson landscaping) on the banjo and vocals, K-lub Van Etten on the washtub bass and saw, and Lion Lunn on the washboard. Over the next year the line-up changed adding different instruments such as harmonica and jug (Jade Gardner), in the last year they have added Dante Vera on washtub and Chris Leland on dobro and fiddle, making them a solid 6 sometimes 7 piece who’s style of acoustic music is best explained by them “You can call us bluegrass, you can call us ragtime, you can call us folk, country, or a bunch of drunken¬¬ retards, we really don’t care.” Their album “Aint’ nobody here but me” Will be out soon on Sword Brandishing Records and they’ll also be on tour this summer so be on the look out.
