The Druthers are a rock band hailing from the cultural black hole that is Worcester, Massachusetts.
The band consists of lead singer Mike, an Irish runt with an outrageous manner, a voice that is actually rather good (that lends itself to both intriguing rock melodies and quirky southern-rock Marshall-Tucker-Band-on-goofballs ramblings); Hules, a confused yout who brings his multi-intsrumental talents to the table - he can play the cello, geetar, bass geetar, keyboards, and probably the glockenschphiel and the balalaika, as well as the dijorido - but mostly plays geetar; Berban, a straight-up genius and sax prodigy, who cannot be summed up in words; as well as two other kids I don't know as well. Jim was a member of The Druthers before gallavanting off to New York, he was the bassist and is a solo singer-songwriter and an honorary member of J-Unit (cause his name begins with J.).
They are noted for emerging from an enviroment that does not particularly encourage creativity, but more importantly for their classic rock sound that does indeed seem a bit experimental, or a bit "quirky" as described by lead singer Mike. They seem to feature the traditional 4-piece rock band setup, but do have quite the bit of multi-instrumentation going on. Berban's sax skills set them apart (and might make them sound a wee bit like Steely Dan at times), while they just rock.
Influences:
J-UNIT, The Beatles, Steely Dan, Kenny G (haha yeah right), The Band, The Eagles, Pink Floyd, Godspeed You! Black Emperor (just kidding), Wilco (though they don't know it), Van der Graaf Generator, and pretty much most good classic rock.
Their forthcoming album "The First Waltz" shamelessly pirates the title from Martin Scorsese's DVD of The Band's last concert, titled "The Last Waltz". It features their two singles "Apparitions" and "Desparados" (perhaps an homage to http://www.desperadosrestaurant.com/, the "best Mexican restaurant in Dallas, TX"), and promises promise in three rumored songs "Enter Milkman", "Douchebag", and "Beethoven Taking a Shit." The latter two songs were penned by J-Unit, of which Hules is a member (since his real name begins with a J), but he didn't write the songs at all so that doesn't matter. "Enter Milkman" faced copyright battles with J-Unit - the primary songwriter of J-Unit concieved the song and took it to his uncle, a NYC copyright attorney - but granted The Druthers permission to use the song out of the goodness of his heart. "Douchebag" was written in a Bio lecture, and "Beethoven Taking A Shit" was written over the phone, with J-Unit's principle songwriter dictating to Hules, who was using Allegro on his shitty-ass computer. "Beethoven" was released on the "Beethoven in the Loo EP", which also featured the concept of "Enter Milkman," but not the song, hence copyright issues.
The record "The First Waltz" is set to release once they get off their asses and record more than two songs in the studio.
