The Hydrothermal Vents is an exciting new Montreal based pop-rock-punk-dance band by John Tielli and Tessa Kautzman.
John Tielli is known for his critically revered projects Metal Kites (Toronto) and Clark the Band (Ottawa), which included collaborations with Tim Kingsbury and Jeremy Gara of the Arcade Fire, as well as members of Wooden Stars, Hilotrons, Snowblink, and Phonemes. For his new project, Tielli departs from the earnestness of his previous endeavours and channels his talents toward the fun and surreal post punk inspired universe of The Hydrothermal Vents.
John is joined by singer and bass player, Tessa Kautzman. Kautzman's previous projects include a indie folk band under her own name, known for haunting, introspective vocals, intense dynamics, and diverse instrumentation. With the Hydrothermal Vents, Kautzman finds the perfect outlet to explore her inner rocker.
On stage, John and Tessa perform with an energy and precision that highlights the imaginative artistry of the songs. To expand the sonic experience, backing tracks deliver layers of drums, synth hooks and touches of additional guitar. There is a definite chemistry between the two unique and dynamic voices. As co-lead vocalists, they use rounds, spoken word, howling, call and response and tight harmonies to recount their fantastical tales of the deep. Tielli's guitar is varied and expressive; dissonant, slow bending notes recall the tension and playfulness of The Pixies' Joey Santiago, while the unconventional chording is reminiscent of Andy Summers' work with The Police. Underneath the guitar, Kautzman's bass provides the punchy, propelling force that is the backbone and driving pulse of the band.
The Hydrothermal Vents harness the unaffected joy such as that experienced by youngsters discovering rock and roll for the first time. Colourful lyrics, infectious beats and melodies dance wildly and unpredictably, fueling the other-worldly habitat rooted at the core of our being. Somewhere on the mid-ocean ridge...The Hydrothermal Vents.
