One Saturday afternoon in July 2001 three brothers: Joe Starmer (bass guitarist/vocals), Ned Starmer (drum and percussion) and Mark Starmer (lead guitarist/vocals) sat around the family table and discussed embarking on a musical project after a jam that had taken place between Joe and Mark a week previously at Mark's house.
The band was to be called Sybbling, named after a business that Mark had set up three months earlier, called Sybbling Music. Numerous songs had been written over many months and it was decided that the time had arrived for them to be recorded.
Jan 2002 all the material was ready for the studio and over a three-month period, subject to funding, the tracks were finally laid. On hearing the outcome, a decision was agreed upon to employ another singer to re-lay all the vocal tracks.
A female singer was found by the name of Amanda Farley formerly of Flame (freedom, love and mother earth) who after touring America extensively was looking for a new style of music to explore. With Sybbling Amanda felt she had found the outlet that she had yearned for. Sadly after almost a year with Sybbling a joint decision was made that Amanda would not be suitable for the groups' future projects. Also around this time Joe had also taken the decision to explore other avenues.
Shortly after Amanda and Joe's departure the vocal tracks were re-laid by Mark. Also around this time during some jamming nights down at a local Pub, The Derby Turn, two new members were employed. Chris Lloyd (rhythm guitarist) and Graham Udall (bass). Soon after, another female singer joined the band by the name of Mandy Lloyd, Chris's sister.
After numerous gigs Chris became unsuitable for the bands future and Robert Bridge was employed to fill his shoes.
In Sept 2003 it was decided to change the name to Eminence - as the name suggests - regal and superior, this was to reflect the unity of the new line up.
During 2005 the band was gigging at many venues in the local area. On 2nd July 2005 Robert Bridge departed from the band to prepare to go to University. Graham Udall was fired in the summer of 2006 for inappropriate behaviour. Mandy Lloyd soon followed.
The band had a re-think and took on two new female singers. Julie Tickle, vocals and keyboards and Diane Beardmore, (now Diane Starmer) on backing vocals. Also Justin joined on the bass. The band was renamed “The Learning Curve” which reflects the ability of the band to adapt to change.
In January 2007 Julie Tickle quit citing musical differences and Diane became the lead singer. Rick Jones (guitarist/singer) was taken on briefly in March, then after being approached by another band in May, decided not to stay.
Pete Garyga (bass) was asked to join the line up in April 2007 after Justin disappeared off the scene.
