The Turn Ups, use the grooviest part of the British Invasion, a dash of rockabilly and the pop sound of the early 60s, mixed in with a sense of humor for one purpose: To create a rockin' sound that you'll want to Turn Up. The Turn Ups formed in Portland, OR in the summer of 2004. Consisting of Eric Ramon (Continental Miniatures, Francis Farmer Gals), Jenni Lynn Nissila (Telephone, Sophe Lux, and Sugar-Free), Joel Roth, and Mark Hitchcox, the band’s self-titled CD was released in December 2006. It was recorded/produced by The Turn Ups and Larry Crane (Tape-Op magazine, Elliott Smith, Sleater-Kinney, Stephen Malkmus) at Jackpot Records (Portland) in Spring 2006 and mastered by long-time Portland musician/producer Tony Lash (Heatmiser, Dandy Warhols) later that summer. The 12 songs on the CD offer lyrics laden with harmony, highlighted in the male-female exchange between Ramon and Jenni Lynn on “Gotta Getta Job,” and the sweet amalgam of voices on “The Record Skips” and “I Remember the Night.” Songs such as “I Saw U” offer humorous, tongue-in-cheek lyrics with local references like Voodoo Donuts, Berbati’s, and Powell’s Books. Listeners will enjoy these songs, which are accented by tasteful licks backed by driving rhythms. Described by Pure Pop Radio’s Alan Haber (http://www.buhdge.com) as “a perfect amalgamation of early rock 'n' roll and beat by way of the River Mersey,” the songs on this release define the original “Quirkabilly” aesthetic of The Turn Ups.
