TomFoolery - CatalyticSouls REC / Modulated NY - Breaks
TomFoolery was an early adopter of the hard and dark Nu-Skool sound in the States. Often found tagging trance, breaks and jungle amongst friends, early Nu-Skool records seemed to capture the best of all worlds. By 2002 TomFoolery was bringing in records direct from the UK to showcase a sound not yet picked up by domestic distributors and buyers. Heads were quickly turned when growling bass flooded over the funky beats. Relocating to the mid-west in 2004, Tomfoolery brought this hard dark breaks sound tempered through the Dirty South jungle scene with him. Early on some promoters confused the demos with jungle and placed him playing dark rooms alongside of acts like Phantom 45. Once again the sound was met with awe and wonder as “breaks” had long been considered a dirty word in much of the area. Mingling with the revered house and techno scenes of the Midwest had it's influence as well. The sounds and mixing style continued to evolve incorporating these house and techno influences into an exciting nu sound for the dance floor. What emerged was a sound dark and dirty enough to satisfy even the roughest while blended with a sophistication appreciated in the big room. In the studio TomFoolery's pension for analog and classic hardware leads to a production technique long forgotten by many although still breathing strong in the psy scene. His determination and years of studio work have led to a series of releases by TomFoolery including work with cutting edge UK breaks producer Transformerman and multiple projects with legendary Florida breaks producer DJ Fixx. Today TomFoolery’s sound continues to represent the cutting edge of the worldwide breaks collective.
Beyond his national touring schedule as a DJ, TomFoolery is founder of CatalyticSouls, a crew responsible for hosting underground electronic and live band festivals in multiple states including: the Cave Stock, CaveFest, and UnderGround Sound Series as well as Gamma Fest featuring Shpongle and Hallucinogen, EarthTones and numerous one off events. TomFoolery has done extensive scholarly research and study of electronic music and the rave scene under the direction of Phylis Johnson and Todd Herreman as part of his masters studies at SIUC as well as instructing audio engineering and production labs for RT and MCMA students. Journeying into the metaphysical realm, TomFoolery continues to study the practice of sound in healing, chakras, energy flows, and kundalini.
