Unleash the Archers is a Canadian heavy metal band from Victoria, British Columbia. Their music incorporates elements of traditional heavy metal, power metal and melodic death metal. The band was formed in 2007 by vocalist Brittney Hayes, also known as Brittney Slayes, and drummer Scott Buchanan, along with guitarist Brayden Dyczkowski. Guitarist Mike Selman joined soon afterward, and bassist Zahk Hedstrom completed the lineup in October 2007. In 2008 the band recorded a self-titled four song demo that included two tracks later re-recorded for their debut album.
The debut studio album was recorded with Jason Hywell Martin at Omega Mediacore Studios in Richmond, British Columbia and released independently in August 2009. It is the only album to feature the original lineup. The second studio album was recorded with Nick Engwer and Stu McKillop at the Hive Soundlab in Burnaby, British Columbia and released independently in May 2011. Grant Truesdell contributed two guitar solos to the album and later joined the band after Selman’s departure. The release was a concept album set in a distant future and centered on the exploits of a mercenary in space.
A subsequent three song EP was issued exclusively on 7 inch vinyl, with an additional track titled Arise provided to those who pre ordered and later released digitally. This EP marked the departure of bassist Zahk Hedstrom. In February 2015 the band signed with Napalm Records and released the album "Time Stands Still", with European and North American release dates in June and July 2015. The album moved the band toward a more traditional heavy metal sound following the departure of Dyczkowski and the addition of guitarist Andrew Kingsley.
On May 26, 2015 the band released the video for "Tonight We Ride", influenced by the film "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome" and filmed in the Nevada desert with props from the Death Guild Thunderdome camp at Burning Man. After touring Europe in late 2016, the band prepared a new album featuring bassist Nikko Whitworth. The single "Cleanse the Bloodlines" was released on April 8, 2017, and the album "Apex" followed on June 2, 2017 through Napalm Records. "Apex" became their first album to appear on Billboard charts, reaching various positions across metal, hard music, independent and digital categories, and also charting in Canada. The band toured Europe with Orden Ogan in support of the album. In early 2018 it was announced that Whitworth had left the group.
Brittney Hayes indicated that the band was working on an EP of cover songs and on a full length follow up to "Apex". On August 30, 2019 the band released the single "Northwest Passage", a cover of a song by Stan Rogers, and issued the EP "Explorers" on October 11, 2019. In August 2020 they released their fifth full length album "Abyss", continuing the narrative introduced on "Apex", and announced plans for a graphic novel based on the albums’ story.
On December 6, 2021 the band announced that bassist Nick Miller had become a full time member. On May 3, 2022 they reported that they were writing their next album. In November 2022 Brittney Slayes stated that the album would be a concept release with a post apocalyptic setting and an intended fall 2023 release. The sixth studio album, "Phantoma", was released on May 10, 2024.
