Wolfsbane are an English heavy metal band formed in 1984 in Tamworth, Staffordshire. The band was active until 1994 and reformed in 2010 after two brief reunion performances. Their lineup has included vocalist Blaze Bayley, guitarist Jason "Jase" Edwards, bassist Jeff Hateley and drummer Steve Danger. Wolfsbane are known as the band in which Bayley first gained recognition before joining Iron Maiden and later beginning a solo career.
Wolfsbane were formed in 1984 and recorded three early demos, "Wolfsbane" in 1985, "Dancin' Dirty" in 1987 and "Wasted but Dangerous" in 1988. The band later signed to the Def American label. Their debut studio album, "Live Fast, Die Fast", produced by Rick Rubin, was released in 1989. In 1990 they released the EP "All Hell's Breaking Loose Down at Little Kathy Wilson's Place". Their second studio album, "Down Fall the Good Guys", followed in 1991 and produced the single "Ezy", which reached number 68 on the UK Singles Chart. During the late 1980s and early 1990s Wolfsbane toured with a number of established heavy metal and hard rock bands.
After being dropped by Def American, the band were voted the United Kingdom’s best unsigned act in 1993. That year they released the live album "Massive Noise Injection" through the Bronze Company label. In 1994 Wolfsbane released their third studio album, "Wolfsbane", also through Bronze Company. A limited edition version included the EP "Everything Else". Later that year Bayley left the band after being selected to replace Bruce Dickinson as lead vocalist of Iron Maiden, and Wolfsbane subsequently disbanded.
Following the breakup, Edwards, Hateley and Danger formed the band Stretch in 1995 with vocalist Jez Spencer Housden and released the mini-album "World of Stretch".
Wolfsbane reunited for a short performance at the Rock of Ages Festival in Tamworth in September 2007. This was followed by a short United Kingdom tour supporting The Wildhearts in December 2007. In December 2009 the band toured again, supporting The Quireboys. In 2010 the group announced that they would resume activity on a full-time basis.
In April 2011 Wolfsbane released the EP "Did It for the Money" and performed a headline concert in London on the same day. Later that month they toured in support of Saxon. The band released their fourth studio album, "Wolfsbane Save the World", in 2012 and supported it with a United Kingdom tour beginning in October 2011. During the same period they also released the album "The Lost Tapes: A Secret History", consisting of previously recorded material.
In May 2021 the band announced that they had begun writing new material for their first album in nearly a decade. The album "Genius" was announced in April 2022 and released on 5 June 2022. In August 2024 Wolfsbane announced that they had begun work on another studio album.
Throughout this period Blaze Bayley has continued to perform as both a solo artist and as a member of Wolfsbane.
