TriMet maps will load in a new window.
i can't believe the dodos are playing at the sea shanty. this is nutso.
the dodos had to go out of town unfortunately they will not be playing :(
great line-up for tonight! just added monster-sized monsters and dp
This was by far one of the worst house show experiences I've ever had. The dude with the plugs who appeared to be in charge was a total asshole. Not only did he disrespect my friends who were supposed to play - Gone to Croatoan - but he also made masturbating hand gestures while the touring band was playing. This action was preceded by him throwing one of the members of Gone to Croatoan out for simply criticizing his authority. Apparently he didn't like the music. Perhaps he shouldn't book shows at his house if he doesn't know what the bands are going to sound like, that way he won't have to be a fucking dick. For fuck sake, Wah Wah Exit Wound was no louder than Monster-sized Monster, and I have my doubts that the one note that Gone to Croatoan was allowed to play was any louder either. So much for merging scenes or genres. Its clear where this house stands.
Super unfortunate. I've never gone to a show at this particular house, and it sounds like I probably never will.
The Show at the Shanty was great last night and "the Guy With the Plugs" is a God among men. No one wants the cops called on house shows, it was his house, and Gone to Croatoan's warm up alone was far louder than any other band. Not to mention the massive amount of shit talking that was going on while the band was breaking down was more than uncalled for. But anyways, It was a great show, Glad to see DP playing house shows and its always good to have touring bands roll through. There's a great show going on Next Friday too that everyone needs to go to.
I'm sorry that some people didn't seem to have a good time last night, but there's no need for finger pointing and sh*t on PCPDX. Complaining on the level just seems childish and whiny. Just say you had a bad time and leave it at that. Personally I've never had a bad time and I've been going The Sea Shanty for years. Keep up the good work guys.
Been to one other show at the Sea Shanty, saw the Taxpayers there, and that was great, but last night was awful. I'm still a bit baffled as to why the hand gestures were made during Wah Wah Exit Wound's set, and why Mikey was thrown out for making a smart ass joke about sound levels. True, this "god among men" (no gods no masters, eh?) lives there and he makes the decisions, but if he only wanted his friends to play he should have never invited bands outside of his clique.
there seems to be a lot of misunderstanding going on here and it makes me very sad. everyone wishes gone to croatoan had played last night, and those of us that were in charge take responsibility for not getting things started sooner, which is really the main reason they didnt play. wah wah exit wound was great, not to mention great sports about the amount of disorganization going on. unfortunately it got kinda late and we asked them to start wrapping up their set at midnight. it always sucks when that happens but it does happen. i dont understand this attack on the sea shanty house and "the guy with the plugs", it seems really uncalled for. (and this "hand gesture" thing of course did not happen). apparently some people got the wrong idea, and frankly if anyone wants to bring that kind of anger and negativity into a house show then they are welcome to not come back. We arent used to dealing with people that want to be assholes and it may result in getting you kicked out. There was a great turn out last night and even though we got started late i hope everyone else had fun. thanks to ryan from confederacy of dunces for helping make this happen. At the sea shanty we love having new bands and new music and making new friends. Next weeks show is gonna be great, so Bad Times, please dont come.
I saw the hand gesture, it was during one of Wah Wah Exit Wound's more technical parts. I guess its my word against plug-dude's. It was around the time he was putting his hands over his ears, and just before he shouted at the band to "turn down." Perhaps a momentary lack of maturity due to alcohol and frustration? I didn't know this person was in charge until he got up in Mikey's face and then they went "outside." I couldn't believe this was even happening. It was "uncalled for." Don't worry, I won't be back to the Sea Shanty. Also should add that one way to keep the disorganization down is to NOT add two of your friends bands to the bill at the last minute. And to NOT let your friends band play forever. Monster-sized Monster was great, but their set was way too long for a six band bill.
The internet sucks.
Mr.Plug is free to have an opinion about music right? And dont worry Gin it was a glorious show and the line up was great. The extra bands added that nice little pazzaz
Hey all, I guess I should put in a word here. I hope this boosts the positivity a bit, even though gin.fish and various friends have already taken great strides in that direction. First and foremost, I certainly was not making masturbatory hand gestures. It sounds a little silly for me to have to point that out, and probably won't make much of a difference to the offended parties, but I just wanted to make it clear that I enjoyed Wah Wah Exit Wound's music, and felt horrible about announcing that midnight had rolled around. That's how it goes sometimes. If I looked upset or angry when I did it, I was, but not at the band or anyone else, just the situation. It sucks telling people to wrap up while they're playing. We're happy people here, and we have a lot of happy friends and strangers who have been coming to happy shows for a very, very long time. We have welcomed a lot of different people into our home to have a blast. Unfortunately, not everyone gets along. That is a sad and unavoidable fact. If you feel like you don't like us or our house, that's a shame, and I obviously wish things had gone differently. If there are things that you think you should be entitled to when you come to a show at our house that we did not provide, then it seems like a good plan to choose other houses and other shows that can meet your expectations. Or, better yet, start throwing shows at your house! We love variety, and show houses close down all the time. If you know how this should be done better, then you should try it. You'll have fun, and create a space where others who like the way you would do things can have a good time. Good luck, have fun, enjoy great music, and anyone is welcome to come to our shows (even people who say angry stuffs about me on the webs, then realize their friends, or a band they like are playing here). We just hope that our guests and visitors can bring a good attitude, and a little respect for the fact that they are in someone else's house. That is all.
To be fair Mr.Plug you might have them been making these hand gestures at. I know i was making them at you. (wink wink, nudge nudge)
ALL of the sets were too long for the amount of time we had left. no favoritism. but i will be the first to admit that since jay awesome moved out in june and myself and the other sea shantians took over the booking/hosting of shows, i have struggled with making things go smoothly. if you have met me you would know that all i care about at a show is that the bands are happy and feel like it was worth coming over to play.
Does anyone else have a hard time taking the commentary of some one call "bad times" seriously? The name just seems to be a precursor to their opinion (Having a "bad time" no matter what). I personally never noticed any hand movements, but if there was one so what? I've seen worse. The people at the sea shanty open their house to complete strangers without asking for any sort of compensation. They are good hearted people with a great venue house thats open to all. Any one who has negative opinions on them should take a step back and think about it before spurting off sh*t talk and slander. Furthermore the first band was extremely loud, and if they can't respect the request from a member of the house for the sake of the police being called and make some sort of compromise, then they have no business at a house venue in the first place. Any way, I'm glad that the majority of the people that also went to that show had a good time.
Makes sense, Gin.fish. From the few times I've met Jay Awesome I can imagine he'd have handled things differently. For the record, Croatoan didn't seem to have a problem with anyone in the house, except one plugged individual. They didn't even have a problem with not playing, but the fact that someone got thrown out of the house for "talking shit" two hours later (and were not even talking about hostile shit-talk, but playful shit-talk) baffled all of us. Ugh. How can you say you had a good house show when a large group of people left unhappy? As for plug-dude, of course he's going to deny his disrespectful behavior. I wouldn't have even mentioned it if he wasn't the "one in charge" or a "god among men." Totally awful for a show host to act in such a way. And, dude, you can run a house show without acting like a cop!
hey show hopper. "extremely loud" is the way we like it. we've never had a problem at a house before last night. we play houses and host shows at our house all of the time. for you to say we have "no business" being at a house show is just, well, rude of you. we could have turned down, yes. but that's not our sound and that's not how we like to present our music in a live setting. it was no disrespect to the house by turning off and loading out. it would have been disrespectful to ignore the request and just play, don't you think?
I would much rather have Mr.Plug (i laugh everytime i call him that) lay down some rule and "police" the show than actual police, Because i guarantee that the police wouldn't leave it at just hand gestures. I can also tell you that Jay wouldn't have taken any disrespect about him or his house. SO hey lets stop talking shit about our Plugged friend, who is a god among men for letting strangers crowd into his house and clean up there mess afterwards. Because the only profit he is getting out of this is from the deposite from the cans you leave behind.
Don't drink beer. Don't leave cans.
for the record, "the one in charge" is the sea shanty. that includes gin.fish, mr.plug, and more. we made our decisions together, so no need to put this on one indiviual.
Whoa.
This show's booker/promoter comments: First, those that open and share their space for music in this town are a rare and precious gift. Believe that. Discussion of "business" with music and house shows is lame. Consider music and house shows sacred. So, statements of "no business" don't help open any dialogue for people to learn and grow in the scene. Internet shit-talking is incredibly hilarious and depressing, that being said...here goes: We're supposed to be allies and stick up for our friends and challenge each other on our shit. It is OK for arguments and disagreements to occur. It's how we handle these situations that define our scene and community. Hopefully, we're in this together. I've booked shows at the Sea Shanty before and they helped me out when a show had to be moved. The house seems to be made up of good people who appreciate music and want to share their space. As for this particular show there were some things the Sea Shanty did really well and some things that could be improved. That's how shows go. Everyone makes mistakes and should be given the opportunity to learn from them. Things the Sea Shanty did well: 1. House was open and ready for the show 2. House promoted the show 3. House actively added bands to the show (more on this) 4. House collected $$$ for the touring band 5. House gave the $$$ to the touring band Things the house could have done better: 1. Give priority to the touring band's set 2. Explain to the bands they added to the bill that it would be rude to play longer than 20-25 minutes 3. Expedite moving of gear and set up between bands 4. Organize show by sound level: acoustic/quiet bands play last, loud bands first 5. Not having 6 bands play a house show I feel that Gone to Croatoan could have played their set, which is only 15 minutes long or so and it would've been fine. I've seen GTC a few times and they play louder than some, but not necessarily louder than others. I can also respect a house for asking people to turn down. That is a decision for the house to make and I feel like that though the exchange was awkward and uncomfortable, it got worked out. I was present in the room when GTC were asked to turn down and GTC were very respectful and good-natured about it despite being very disappointed. I feel like GTC get the spirit award for the show. For sticking it out to see their friends on tour and then defending their friend's set time. I think it is incredibly lame that GTC were asked to leave when they were sticking up for their friends on tour. We had a plan for loud bands to play first and then the quieter, acoustic bands play last. I find the logic in this irrefutable. Despite that, the house "decided" an acoustic band should play before the touring band after reassuring me that the touring band would be able to play their full set, thus cutting the touring band's set short and creating an unneeded conflict. I think it was a huge mistake on the house's part and that it was VERY rude of the other band to displace the touring band. I won't work with that band again. BUT, it is not the end of the world. The Sea Shanty should keep having shows and learn from what went wrong and be pleased with what went well. They are doing their part for diy in pdx. The touring band played some songs, got gas $$$ for the drive to the next town, got to hang out with friends and had a bizarre show with a story to tell at the end of it. Gone to Croatoan should keep playing house shows. I hope I can make it to see them at the Fridge in SE this week because they really are fantastic and good folks from what I've seen. A few words to the younger? cuter? less ex
Thanks for the impartial, levelheaded comments Ryan.
When I had talked to GoC about the noise issue, I know they were disappointed but it really was to loud. Though only cause it was started so late in my opinion. The tall guy, when I talked to him said he understood being a show house himself but also saying that this was his ONLY band he's played in that he wont compromise on. And I respect that. I didn't want them to leave so I asked if they were at least going to stay for the other bands & he happily said he was going to. There was no problem there at all. The other guy was defiantly shit talking. more that a bit but he was drunk & I personally didn't see it get out of hand. With that said. Shit talking will happen when some people get drunk. there's no filter & there's no real avoiding it. Some of may roomies do it, so really we kind of have to get over it (the shit talking, that is). In my opinion. but take with a grain of salt. As for the extra bands. That's totally my fault. I just wanted to fill in the Dodos gap. Sorry. this is only the third show I helped organize. I hand said I found some bands & got it oked buuut I forgot to mention the time restraint. but I know now & the problems that that can cause. I don't know what happened with the Wah Wah not playing when they were suppose to. I thought that part was all worked out. My apologies to Wah Wah Exit Wound. & the next time I'll quicken the pace of set up/break down time.
Oh, about the guy getting kicked out. I have to agree with The plug guy. You do not disrespected the house that you are invited in to. I wasn't there you what happened but from the way he was acted when I saw him. I believe my roommates on what they said. Weather or not it could have been handled differently. I'm not arguing with a roommate about someone not respecting the house.
P.P.P.S. Thank, Ryan. You're right. I'll do my best to help make the show in the future better. :)
The SS works hard to keep a space open for bands to play and people to hang out, and they do a great job. I hope they continue to have shows because what they have going is good and rare. Friday's show was a lot of fun for the vast majority. The bands were good too. I wish everybody could have played but sometimes these things happen. Sounds like the SS knows where they went wrong and instead of beating a dead horse, I'd like to give props to them for everything they do. And listen to them, they call the shots at their shows!
The show this Friday is going to be fucking fantastic. So even if last time got far to complicated for its own good, it doesn't matter. There is no way you can be down and out when Nate and Tessa are circling around. And look at the rest of the lineup!!!!!!! This show couldn't get much better.
