Black Fortress of Opium formed in Boston, MA in 2006. They have 2 albums out - the most recent, “Stratospherical” being new as of March 2012. Their sound has been called rootsy yet ethereal, and the group features female vocals and mandolin, in addition to a rock lineup. Some notable personnel involved on the new record, in addition to live band members, includes engineer/producer Martin Bisi (Swans, Serena Maneesh, Zorn, Sonic Youth) and drummer Brian Viglione (The Dresden Dolls). National and international touring acts they have previously played with include Serena Maneesh and Barbez. When asked for references, the band says they sound like the lovechild of PJ Harvey and Nick Cave, with Patsy Cline as an aunt, Syd Barrett as uncle, and perhaps The Cure as godparents.
