ask a punk the streets Portland, OR
TriMet maps will load in a new window.
This show is at Howling House... Good job Portland, make a forum to include everyone, then proceed to exclude everyone at the same time...
its a house show, maybe they don't want a million people there.
Where is Howling House? Is it okay to be underage and drink there?
lol
Its never okay to be underage and drink in a stranger's house.
hey "not a punk", first of all, its SCOWLING HOUSE. second, i dunno who put this on PC-PDX, but the flyer (which was up around town) had the house name and location on it. if this happens again, you have my permission to add our house name. and i hope you're hosting internet-public events at your own home as well.
"House Show" Maybe if they didn't want a million people there they shouldn't have posted it on the internet to begin with. "Bryan" Howling House/Scowling House, my bad. I forgot it has gone by two different names in the past year and didn't pick the one that you wanted for this show on this day. I have had internet public shows at my house, and have hosted shows at many different houses and venues. The point of this post wasn't directed at you, it was aimed at the person that thinks it is fare to do this to people on a public forum. The way I see it, pcpdx is designed to be inclusive and help build a community for diy music in Portland or for People that just moved here or are trying to get into the scene can use it as a way to get to know the city and the sub-cultures it has. The ASK A PUNK, or UNDISCLOSED RESPECT IT, locations on this website are silly and the most un-inclusive bullshit I have ever seen on something that was made to include everything and everyone and build a community. It's the same thing as telling someone "hey I am having a birthday party...... and you aren't invited." Why bother even saying it in the first place?
okayokay.pc-pdx IS designed to be all inclusive and to build community and have a central place for organization of rad people and awesome shit. I have fought for years - six if you're counting - to keep any sort of listing fully inclusive and discoverable and to help get the word out. That being said, the Guide definitely seems to show symptom of being victim to its own success: many people and houses just-stopped-posting.Shit, DaniKordani stopped posting shows at her house or others that she booked and she's probably the singlehandledly most influential other person that has help keep this site alive and funded over the last few years. Shit, at the benefit show she organized around the benefit mix-tape she put together ( Mix it Up, Fuck It Up!) - Jai said something along the lines of "fuck yeah pc-pdx! ..even though we can't post our shows anymore".-These people are our bread and butter and have been part of the pc-pdx community since day 3, pretty much. That's almost seven whole years now. That's also clear indication for the core crew that something needs to be done to enable this thing to keep going in the same spirit. As much as i've been against publishing shows with no address attached. I would MUCH rather publish them with no address instead of not at all.We have met many, many friends in the exact scenario that you outlined, N.A.P. - i/m pretty sure i even met DaniKordani as a recent portland transplant herself via a pc-pdx posted show @ The Sea Shanty.. and like i said, she's now the one that does the best to keep us bankrolled! It's important to me to keep alive that source of info for new PDX'ers or fresh into the DIY community kids that are discovering how much cool shit pdx is doing. That goes away, however, if nobody posts anything at all.At least if there is an 'undisclosed' (which i posted - read the venue bio for more info + background) show posted at least a few days in advance, that at least gives people the opportunity to email a band and say "hey, i'm actually interested in the music - hook up that address!". There's definitely a problem where shitty kids show up and don't see the bands at all - fuck them. People who are genuinely interested in the music, scene, and community still can be a part - but it does require a little more effort yes. Please check out the comments here for example - i did my damnedest to guide everybody to the right points of contact and will always do my best if you guys can't find the band contacts (like the new to PDX'ers might have problems with?)Here's a link where DaniKordani gave an email address for those interestedIt's the best that i've been able to think of so far, really. -I've asked for ideas and suggestions and so far - this is the best route found. PLEASE PLEASE let us know if you have any ideas, serious! You can post ideas here, leave private messages on the Contact page, you can also email : ASS(at)PC-PDX.COMUntil we find a better way, this seems to be the best and i still encourage *everybody* to post any show they know about and get the word out that there is a show somewhere - punks/not-punks: keep up on the calendar and always look ahead a few days or more to make sure that you can make contact if there's a show or band you want to catch. There's a membership feature that you can 'subscribe' to a band or venue or whatever search term and those will all appear on one page. Perhaps that will give you a better heads up so nothing slips by.Again though, we're ALWAYS open to idea or suggestion for ANYTHING. Just let us know!scene + community :: *DIT* :: DoItTogether!
i think there are some issues with "ask a punk" and whatnot, but the reality is that sometimes people feel squeamish posting the address they sleep at on the internet. also, in some cities, it keeps cops out and punks in. i also want people to keep publicizing their shows, and i guess it requires a certain amount of dedication from show goers. emailing the band is definitely a great idea. also literally "asking a punk". gary and i have been doing this event flyer that mostly lists venue names and not addresses (http://forming.tumblr.com/image/62868961912) and i've overheard several people asking someone near a bulletin board where a house is, and getting results. like show-bot said, posting a show location as just the house's name is useful in getting the word out, giving people an opportunity to figure it out. its imperfect but perhaps gives us a goal to stride for: to create a more tight knit DIY network in which people know where local punkhouses are located, or they can at least ask someone and get an answer (+make a new friend?). lastly, i think posting a show as "UNDISCLOSED" without any reasonable way to obtain the address is some egotistical, haughty bullshit, and i half-endorse crashing their party with all your friends, being really respectful and fun, and showing them how a house show should be. also, i agree that danikordani is the bread and butter and i love her.
here here, bryan. it's common sense I think, if I'm having a party and I want to invite someone I possibly don't know, I'd at least like to get a message on fb asking for the address so I can check their fb page n make sure they're not a hoodrat that's gonna steal my tv. Can we stop having this discussion now? This is like the 5th time I've seen this message since I started posting shows on here. Use your noggins folks, undisclosed means I can let all of my friends know that the show is happening, and I can meet new people if they message me for the address and I see that they're legit. Doesn't take getting your Grade 11 to figure it out.
