Black Mountain is a Canadian psychedelic rock band from Vancouver, British Columbia. Formed in 2004, the band currently comprises Stephen McBean (guitars, vocals), Amber Webber (vocals), Jeremy Schmidt (keyboards), Colin Cowan (bass, keyboards), and Joshua Wells (drums).
The band has released four studio albums: "Black Mountain" (2005), "In the Future" (2008), "Wilderness Heart" (2010), and "IV" (2016), all through the Jagjaguwar label. Additionally, they have issued two EPs: "Druganaut" (2004) and "Bastards of Light" (2008). A split single with Destroyer was released in late 2004 on Spirit of Orr Records. The single "Stormy High" was released in 2006 by Suicide Squeeze Records. In April 2007, the band released a vinyl single titled "Surrender Sound Session: Unkle vs. Autolux/Black Mountain", which included a remix of "No Hits" on the B side.
Their debut album was selected as one of Amazon.com's Top 100 Editor's Picks of 2005. "In the Future" was shortlisted for the 2008 Polaris Music Prize and received a nomination for Best Alternative Album at the 2009 Juno Awards. The song "Stay Free" from this album was featured on the soundtrack for the film "Spider-Man 3".
In 2005, Black Mountain supported Coldplay on their Twisted Logic Tour for a three-week period, concluding with a performance in San Diego. In September 2010, the band played at the Incubate festival in Tilburg, Netherlands, performing in an amphitheatre located in the woods of Oisterwijk.
Stephen McBean also leads the band Pink Mountaintops, which explores a more experimental sound. Black Mountain is associated with the Black Mountain Army, a group of musicians, artists, and friends from Vancouver. While often perceived as a collective, the band has stated that the Black Mountain Army is more of an informal group of their extended creative community.
Several members of Black Mountain have worked with social service organisations in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, including those assisting individuals who are chronically poor, affected by addiction, or living with mental illness. They have described these experiences as grounding and impactful.
"Wilderness Heart" was longlisted for the 2011 Polaris Music Prize. The track "Wucan" was featured in the eighth episode of season two of the FOX television series "The Following", which aired on March 11, 2014. The song "Druganaut" was included in a Father’s Day commercial for J.C. Penney in June 2014.
