Chelsea Wolfe (born Chelsea Joy Wolfe on 14 November 1983) is an American singer-songwriter and musician from Northern California. Her music draws on folk, gothic rock, doom metal, industrial music and electronic experimentation, moving between acoustic arrangements and heavily amplified instrumentation. Born in Roseville and raised in the Sacramento area, Wolfe began writing and recording music during childhood. Her father played in a country band and maintained a home recording studio, while her early listening included country, folk, blues and R&B. Her early albums, The Grime and the Glow (2010) and Apokalypsis (2011), combined folk songwriting with distorted guitars, noise and experimental recording techniques. Unknown Rooms: A Collection of Acoustic Songs (2012) presented predominantly acoustic material, while Pain Is Beauty (2013) expanded her use of electronic arrangements. Abyss (2015) and Hiss Spun (2017) placed greater emphasis on industrial textures and heavy guitars. Birth of Violence (2019), recorded at home in Northern California, returned to acoustic, folk-oriented songwriting. Multi-instrumentalist Ben Chisholm has been a recurring collaborator across her recordings. Wolfe and drummer and multi-instrumentalist Jess Gowrie also perform as Mrs. Piss. Their debut album, Self-Surgery, was released in 2020. In 2021, Wolfe participated in Converge's collaborative album Bloodmoon: I, alongside Chisholm and Cave In's Stephen Brodsky. She subsequently worked with Tyler Bates and Chisholm on the score for Ti West's horror film X (2022). Her guest vocal appearances include the title track of Russian Circles' Memorial (2013), “Funeral” on Myrkur's Mareridt (2017), and “Night People” on Deafheaven's Ordinary Corrupt Human Love (2018). She Reaches Out To She Reaches Out To She was released through Loma Vista Recordings on 9 February 2024. Produced by Dave Sitek and mixed by Shawn Everett, it combined electronic production and trip-hop rhythms with guitar-based arrangements. Its themes of change and recovery developed alongside Wolfe's sobriety, which began in 2021. The album was followed by two companion EPs that year: Undone, featuring remixes, and Unbound, featuring stripped-down performances and a cover of Spiritbox's “Cellar Door.” The Dark, made with producer Jennifer Decilveo, followed through Loma Vista Recordings on 21 August 2026.
