Colbie Marie Caillat (born May 28, 1985) is an American singer-songwriter. She rose to prominence through the social networking website MySpace in 2005.
Caillat signed with Universal Republic Records and released her debut studio album, "Coco", in 2007. The album was supported by the singles "Bubbly" and "Realize", reached number five on the Billboard 200, and was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). At the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards, her 2008 duet with Jason Mraz, "Lucky", won Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals. Her second album, "Breakthrough" (2009), was nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album, and she received an Album of the Year Grammy as a contributor to Taylor Swift's "Fearless" (2008). "Breakthrough" debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and included the single "Fallin' for You". Her third album, "All of You" (2011), was preceded by the single "Brighter Than the Sun". Her fourth album, the Christmas album "Christmas in the Sand", was released in 2012, followed by "Gypsy Heart" in 2014, which included the single "Try". From 2018 to 2020, Caillat was a member of the country music group Gone West.
Caillat has sold more than six million albums and more than 10 million singles worldwide. In 2009, Billboard ranked her as the 94th-best-selling music artist of the 2000s.
Caillat was born in Malibu, California, and grew up in Newbury Park, California. Her father, Ken Caillat, co-produced Fleetwood Mac's albums "Rumours" (1977), "Tusk" (1979), and "Mirage" (1982). Her parents gave her the nickname "Coco" during infancy, which she later used as the title of her debut album.
Caillat took piano lessons during childhood but became interested in singing after seeing Lauryn Hill perform in the film "Sister Act 2". She subsequently began taking vocal lessons and performed publicly for the first time in sixth grade. She later performed covers of "Killing Me Softly" and "Tell Him", among other songs.
Caillat met producer Mikal Blue, who hired her to sing on techno music used at fashion shows. She began playing acoustic guitar at the age of 19, and Blue helped her record her first song.
Caillat auditioned for "American Idol" during one of the show's early seasons but was rejected during the pre-audition stage and did not perform for the judges. She later auditioned again with her original song "Bubbly" and was rejected. Caillat subsequently said that she considered the rejection appropriate because she was not yet prepared for the experience.
The popularity of Caillat's MySpace profile contributed to her becoming the most popular unsigned singer in her genre on the platform for four consecutive months.
Caillat's debut album, "Coco", was released in July 2007 in Australia and Asia and shortly afterwards in North America. A deluxe edition was released in Japan in September 2008 and internationally in November 2008. The album was certified double platinum by the RIAA. Its first single, "Bubbly", reached number five on the Billboard Hot 100 and number two on the Pop 100. It also spent 19 weeks at number one on the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart and 14 weeks at number one on the Hot Adult Top 40 Tracks chart. The single was certified platinum by the RIAA in December 2007.
In November 2007, Caillat released the Christmas song "Mistletoe", which reached number 75 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was the most downloaded holiday song of the year. The song was also featured in the film "Baby Mama". The second single from "Coco", "Realize", was released in January 2008 and reached number 20 on the Billboard Hot 100. "The Little Things" was released as the album's third single in Germany in March 2008 and in the United States in October. A French-language version was also recorded. The fourth US single, "Somethin' Special (Beijing Olympic Mix)", was released in July 2008 as part of the deluxe edition and was associated with the 2008 Summer Olympics.
Caillat also appeared on Schiller's song "You" and in its music video. She contributed a cover of "Here Comes the Sun" by the Beatles with Mikal Blue to the soundtrack of the film "Imagine That". She was featured on Colombian singer Juanes' live album "La vida... es un ratico (en vivo)" on the song "Hoy Me Voy". Her song "Midnight Bottle" appeared in the soundtrack of the Brazilian telenovela "Três Irmãs", in which she also appeared as herself. Caillat provided background vocals for and co-wrote Taylor Swift's song "Breathe", which appeared on Swift's album "Fearless".
In January 2009, Caillat appeared on Jason Mraz's song "Lucky", from his album "We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things.". Her second studio album, "Breakthrough", was released in August 2009. Much of the album was co-written by Jason Reeves, and guitarist David Becker performed on two tracks. During the album's development, Caillat worked with Kara DioGuardi and Reeves, including during a three-week songwriting trip to Hawaii.
"Breakthrough" debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with first-week sales of 106,000 copies. It was later certified platinum by the RIAA. Its first single, "Fallin' for You", was released in June 2009 and reached number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. It also reached number two on the Adult Pop Songs chart and number one on the Adult Contemporary chart. The second single, "I Never Told You", was released in February 2010 and reached number 48 on the Billboard Hot 100, number three on the Adult Pop Songs chart and number 11 on the Adult Contemporary chart.
In 2010, Caillat was named BMI's Songwriter of the Year. She performed "God Bless America" during the seventh-inning stretch at the 2010 Major League Baseball All-Star Game and sang the national anthem at an NFL season-opening game in New Orleans and at a "Monday Night Football" game in Chicago. In December 2010, she performed at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert in Oslo, Norway. She also visited the Farm Sanctuary shelter in Watkins Glen, New York.
Caillat's third studio album, "All of You", was released in July 2011. Produced largely by Greg Wells, it included a guest appearance by Common on "Favorite Song" and songwriting contributions from Ryan Tedder, Toby Gad, Jason Reeves and Rick Nowels. The album debuted at number six on the Billboard 200 with first-week sales of 70,000 copies and reached number one on the Digital Albums chart. Its lead single, "I Do", was released in February 2011 and reached number 23 on the Billboard Hot 100. "Brighter Than the Sun", the second single, was released in May and reached number 51. "What If" reached number 77 on the Billboard Hot 100 following the album's release. "Favorite Song" was subsequently selected as a single through an online poll and reached number 21 on the Hot Adult Pop Songs chart.
Caillat also appeared in the NBC television series "The Playboy Club" as singer Lesley Gore, performing Gore's song "It's My Party" in an episode broadcast in October 2011.
Caillat released the Christmas album "Christmas in the Sand" in October 2012. It included collaborations with Brad Paisley, Gavin DeGraw, Justin Young and Jason Reeves. In 2012, Universal Republic Records was discontinued and its artists, including Caillat, were transferred to Republic Records. Caillat and DeGraw co-wrote "We Both Know" for the soundtrack of the 2013 film "Safe Haven". The song was nominated for Best Song Written for Visual Media at the 2014 Grammy Awards.
Caillat sang the US national anthem before Game 3 of the 2013 World Series between the Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals. Her single "Hold On" was released in November 2013. It was intended as the lead single from her next album but was not included on the US edition of the album and was released as a non-album single in the United States.
"Try" was released in June 2014 as the second single from "Gypsy Heart" internationally and as its lead single in the United States. Written by Caillat, Babyface and Jason Reeves and produced by Babyface, the song reached number 55 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was later certified platinum in the United States. The song was accompanied by a lyric video featuring Caillat's fans and several female public figures without makeup. The official music video depicted Caillat and other women removing makeup during the video.
"Gypsy Heart" was released in September 2014 and was produced by Babyface. It included songwriting contributions from Reeves, Max Martin, Julian Bunetta and Johan Carlsson. The album reached number 17 on the Billboard 200 and sold 16,000 copies in its first week. Caillat also co-wrote "Chasing the Sun" with Reeves and Toby Gad for Hilary Duff and wrote "The Way I Was" for the soundtrack album "The Walking Dead: Songs of Survival Vol. 2".
In 2016, Caillat left her major record label and established the independent label PlummyLou Records, named after her family's dogs. She also moved to Nashville. In July 2016, she released "Goldmine", the first single from her album "The Malibu Sessions". The album was released in October 2016 and included an unreleased version of the song "Gypsy Heart". "Goldmine" appeared on the Billboard Adult Top 40 chart, while "The Malibu Sessions" reached the top 40 of the Billboard 200 and number seven on the Billboard Independent Albums chart. Caillat toured acoustically in support of the album from 2016 into 2017.
In 2017, Caillat participated in a campaign by White House Black Market titled "Women to Women" and recorded a cover of Sister Sledge's "We Are Family".
In 2018, Caillat formed the country music group Gone West with her then-fiancé Justin Young, longtime collaborator Jason Reeves and Reeves' wife Nelly Joy. The group made its debut at the Grand Ole Opry in October 2018 and signed with Grayscale Entertainment. Caillat announced the group's breakup in August 2020. In September 2020, she appeared on the Disney- series "Becoming".
In 2021, Caillat rerecorded her vocals for "Breathe (Taylor's Version)", a new version of her collaboration with Taylor Swift for the album "Fearless (Taylor's Version)". The song was released in April 2021 and appeared on several Billboard charts. In July 2021, Caillat signed with Creative Artists Agency. In September, she released a version of "White Christmas" with country singer Brett Young. The duet appeared on Young's album "Brett Young & Friends Sing the Christmas Classics". Caillat and Young subsequently performed the song on "CMT Crossroads Christmas".
In 2022, Caillat embarked on the "Coco Live 15th Anniversary Tour", performing the album "Coco" in its entirety. The tour continued through the summer and autumn. In October 2022, she released a cover of the Goo Goo Dolls' 1998 song "Iris", which was featured in an advertising campaign for Kroger.
Caillat recorded a new album in Nashville. In April 2023, she released the single "Worth It". She subsequently announced the album "Along the Way", which was released in October 2023. It was preceded by the single "Pretend" and followed by "Wide Open". "Along the Way" was described as Caillat's first solo country album.
Caillat's eighth studio album and first duets album, "This Time Around", was announced in July 2025 and released in August 2025. The album contains duet versions of several of Caillat's previous songs, three original songs, and a cover of Post Malone's "Circles".
