1. Coven was an American psychedelic rock band from Chicago, Illinois, active between 1967 and 1975. The group consisted of vocalist Jinx Dawson, bassist Oz Osborne (not to be confused with Ozzy Osbourne of Black Sabbath), and drummer Steve Ross. They are known for their association with occult themes and for their recording of "One Tin Soldier", originally by Original Caste, which became a top 10 hit and was used as the theme song for the 1971 film "Billy Jack".
Formed in the late 1960s, the band signed to Mercury Records and released their debut album "Witchcraft Destroys Minds and Reaps Souls" in 1969. While musically rooted in psychedelic rock, the album attracted attention for its lyrical focus on occult and satanic themes, including tracks such as "The White Witch of Rose Hall", "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge", and "Dignitaries of Hell". It concluded with the track "Satanic Mass", a 13-minute recording of chants and spoken-word passages. Following controversy linked to media coverage associating occult themes with contemporary crimes, the album was withdrawn from circulation.
The band later released the self-titled album "Coven" in 1972, which included "One Tin Soldier" and the song "Nightingale". Their third album, "Blood on the Snow", was released in 1974. In later years, Jinx Dawson continued to perform under the Coven name and contributed music to the film "Heaven Can Help".

They later reformed and continued performing under the new name. Their music addresses themes such as religion, violence, and social criticism.
3. Coven was also the original name of an American heavy and doom metal band formed in Detroit in 1985, later renamed Coven 13.
