Gavin Theory (Gavin Soens) has been creating music since the lucky young age of 13. At first, Gavin made break beat electronic music using a cheap yamaha keyboard and juggling cassette tapes. He also learned the art of DJing and began playing shows by 15. By the time Gavin Theory was 18, he was a regular fixture at electronic music events throughout the midwest, had two original tracks signed to a small break beat label in London, UK, and his tracks we're played on internet and FM radio shows throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe. All along, Gavin harbored a deep love for soulful thumping hip-hop, and though that was always present in his electronic music, around 2004 Gavin's sights started to shift full time towards the indie hip-hop scene. Shortly afterwards, Gavin Theory linked up with long-time friend Lucas Dix and Hives Inquiry Squad was born.
Formed in Wisconsin in 2005, Hives Inquiry Squad emerged from a kinship between Gavin Theory and Lucas Dix and their mutual appreciation for funky innovate music and introspective lyricism. The duo progressed quickly by critically challenging each other to perfect and expand themselves as people, as well as hip hop artists. Hives Inquiry Squad began to garner attention with their energetic performances, abstract insight, and unique perspective of their genre. Gavin Theory's gritty electronic infused production, coupled with the pairs lyrical content often dealing with the dichotomy of the natural world in a technological age, has developed them a fanbase extending beyond the traditional hip hop audience.
Recent carpetbaggers to Portland, Hives Inquiry Squad has found a home in the eccentric local music scene, already gaining a diverse following from frequent shows in the area, now with Monstro (aka The Great Mundane) as their live DJ. With the release of Gavin Theory's solo endeavor, Escaping Stasis, due in March, as well as their album Edifice dropping shortly afterwards, Hives Inquiry Squad will undoubtedly continue to impress audiences and stretch the definition of hip hop music.
Gavin Theory passed away on April 10, 2012, in the company of his loving family and girlfriend at his home in Portland, Ore.
Gavin's dream was to make music with the power to change people's lives and he never entertained striving towards anything else. His unexpected cancer diagnosis in March of 2010 never diminished his captivating energy and only further inspired his writing and music production.
Gavin's intrepid spirit and infinite mind live on through his perceptive lyricism which continues to move and inspire surviving family, friends, and fellow musicians.
