There are two bands called Griswold: (1) an indie indie pop band from Augsburg, Germany. (2) a punk band from Minneapolis, Minnesota.
(1) With 14 years of experience under their belt, Griswold are, strictly speaking, no newcomers – indeed, the band members have been making music together for half their lives. The band’s origins are surrounded by myths, such as the one about an army of sisters. Rumour has it that Griswold’s members, none of whom had big brothers – indeed, any kind of brother – had to hide in the woods to escape the tyranny of their many sisters, playing music to pass time. The band is said to have surfaced only rarely from their safe hideaway, to delight a hand-picked audience with their music.
Griswold’s multifaceted music contains elements of experimental indie-pop and jazzy folk-rock. In today’s fast-paced music industry, Griswold are unique in taking their time to develop their own, distinct sound over the years. The occasional overlap with the latest trends is coincidence rather than intent. Like a sponge, the band absorb the various styles of music and create something new and unique.
With “Glue”, Griswold present their first official release. After a thorough development process, the sextet from Augsburg thus presents an album that remains true to Griswold’s philosophy. Its motto is quality rather than quantity, hence Glue’s positioning somewhere between EP and album. Indeed, six tracks should be sufficient to win over the listener. With their unmistakable style, the musicians pack their combined passion for music into just under half an hour and captivate the listener with their mix of complexity and catchiness.
“Glue” was developed in various stages, but was mostly recorded in a converted recording studio in the solitude of Tuscany. The recordings were completed in an old barn and in Augsburg’s “Traumraum” studio. It goes without saying that the CD covers continue to be handwritten by Griswold.
Griswold is formed of Uwe Lukatsch (vocals, guitar), Michael Jedelhauser (guitar), Tom Weiß (bass), Ursula Weiß (piano), André Schindler (drums) and Christoph Rick (saxophone). Incidentally, the name Griswold is derived from the well-known film family around Chevy Chase. As the band was still without a name with their very first gig just around the corner, they decided on “Griswold” as a temporary solution. A lot has changed since, but the name has stuck.
