Kataklysm is a Canadian death metal band formed in Montreal, Quebec in September 1991. As of 2024, they have released fifteen studio albums, two EPs, and two DVDs. The band received a Juno Award for Best Heavy Metal Album for "Of Ghosts and Gods" (2015).
Kataklysm initially became known for a fast and highly technical style of death metal that was described as the “Northern Hyperblast”. After releasing their debut demo "The Death Gate Cycle of Reincarnation" in 1992, the band gained attention in the underground metal scene. In 1994, they signed with Nuclear Blast and released the EP "The Mystical Gate of Reincarnation", followed by their debut album "Sorcery" in 1995. Their second album, "Temple of Knowledge" (1996), included their first music video for "The Awakener". Shortly after its release, vocalist Sylvain Houde left the band due to personal and emotional difficulties. Bassist Maurizio Iacono took over vocal duties, while Stephane Barbe joined as bassist. This change also marked a shift in the band’s creative direction, led primarily by Iacono and guitarist JF Dagenais.
In 1998, Kataklysm released "Victims of this Fallen World", the first album with Iacono as vocalist. The album moved toward a more groove-oriented and melodic death metal style. This direction continued with "The Prophecy (Stigmata of the Immaculate)" (2000), which incorporated stronger thrash metal influences. "Epic: The Poetry of War" (2001) further developed the band’s melodic elements and received positive critical attention. In 2002, they released "Shadows & Dust", which became one of their most commercially successful albums and their first to chart in several European countries, including Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. It also featured the track "In Shadows & Dust".
In 2004, Kataklysm released "Serenity in Fire", during which drummer Max Duhamel was temporarily replaced by Martin Maurais due to injury. The album included the tracks "As I Slither" and "The Ambassador of Pain". Duhamel returned for the 2006 album "In the Arms of Devastation", which achieved the band’s highest sales and chart positions up to that time.
The 2008 album "Prevail" continued the band’s commercial growth. Its single "Taking the World by Storm" became one of their most viewed songs online. In 2008, Kataklysm also performed at the Bloodstock festival in the United Kingdom.
The band released "Waiting for the End to Come" in 2013 and "Of Ghosts and Gods" in 2015, both of which received positive reviews. In 2017, they toured North America supporting In Flames. "Meditations" (2018) became their first album to enter the Billboard Top 100, peaking at number 61 and achieving some of their highest international chart positions.
"Unconquered" was released in 2020. Around this period, drummer Oli Beaudoin left the band and was replaced by James Payne. The band continued touring in Europe in 2023. Their fifteenth studio album, "Goliath", was released on August 11, 2023.
