Deicide is an American death metal band formed in 1987 in Tampa. The group was originally established as Carnage by drummer Steve Asheim and guitarists Eric Hoffman and Brian Hoffman. After recruiting bassist and vocalist Glen Benton, the band briefly performed under the name Amon before adopting the name Deicide in 1989.
Deicide gained wider recognition in 1992 with the release of their second studio album, "Legion." During the SoundScan era, the band was ranked among the best-selling death metal acts, second only to Cannibal Corpse in overall sales within the genre. In November 2003, their first two albums, "Deicide" (1990) and "Legion" (1992), were ranked among the top-selling death metal albums of the SoundScan era.
Since their debut, Deicide has released thirteen studio albums, one live album, two compilation albums, and two live DVDs. Their early releases, including "Deicide," "Legion," and "Once Upon the Cross," are frequently cited as influential works within death metal.
The band is known for lyrical themes centered on Satanism, anti-Christianity, and blasphemy. These themes, along with public statements and actions by certain members, have led to controversy, including bans, legal disputes, and criticism from religious and political organizations.
