Carach Angren is a Dutch symphonic black metal band formed in 2003 by two members of the now-defunct bands Inger Indolia and Vaultage. Their style is characterised by prominent orchestral arrangements, black metal and occasional death metal vocals, and guitar riffs. Their studio albums are concept albums with lyrics based on ghost stories and folklore, including the Flying Dutchman. The band distinguishes itself from other symphonic black metal groups through its use of multiple languages, including English, French, German, and Dutch. Most songs are primarily in English, with shifts into other languages in chorus and bridge sections.
The drummer Ivo "Namtar" Wijers left the group in February 2020, leaving singer Dennis "Seregor" Droomers and keyboardist Clemens "Ardek" Wijers as the remaining members.
The name Carach Angren is derived from J. R. R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" and is translated as "Iron Jaws" in the fictional Elvish language Sindarin. In Tolkien's legendarium, Carach Angren, also known as Isenmouthe, refers to a fortified pass leading into the plateau of Gorgoroth in north-western Mordor.
The band was formed in 2003 in Landgraaf in the Netherlands after two members of Vaultage, Lee Hartney and Inger Indolia, started a side project based on a shared interest in legends and black metal. The project became more active than Vaultage, leading both musicians to leave that band.
In 2004, Carach Angren released its first EP, "The Chase Vault Tragedy", a concept release based on the Chase Vault Mystery, involving reports of coffins allegedly moving within a sealed burial vault. In 2005, the band released a second EP, "Ethereal Veiled Existence", based on the story of the Brown Lady. In 2007, the band signed to the German independent record label Maddening Media. Their first full-length album for the label, "Lammendam", was released in 2008 and received international reviews.
Their second album, "Death Came Through a Phantom Ship", was released on 26 February 2010. To support the release, Carach Angren toured Europe on the "A Declaration of Hate" tour alongside extreme metal bands Dark Funeral, Zonaria, and Nefarium.
On 18 May 2012, the band released its third studio album, "Where the Corpses Sink Forever", a concept album dealing with themes related to war, death, and suffering.
On 17 February 2015, the band's fourth album, "This Is No Fairytale", was made available for streaming on Metal Hammer before its official release on 23 February 2015. The album is a reinterpretation of the Hansel and Gretel fairy tale and includes themes such as domestic abuse, drug addiction, alcoholism, sexual abuse of children, suicide, child abduction, and cannibalism.
On 16 June 2017, their fifth studio album, "Dance and Laugh Amongst the Rotten", was released. It departs from the earlier focus on narrative-based storytelling but remains a concept album with ghost-related themes, including figures such as the Blood Queen and Charles Francis Coghlan.
On 10 February 2020, drummer Ivo "Namtar" Wijers left the band. He stated that the departure was motivated by dissatisfaction with the music industry. Seregor and Ardek announced the departure on the band's official website, describing it as amicable and expressing respect for his decision.
In late 2019, the band announced that work had begun on a sixth studio album scheduled for release in mid-2020. The album, titled "Franckensteina Strataemontanus", was later released on 26 June 2020 via Season of Mist. It is a concept album inspired by the life of Johann Konrad Dippel.
