Marduk is a Swedish black metal band formed in Norrköping in 1990. The band released its debut full-length album, "Dark Endless", in 1992 on No Fashion Records. The band is named after Marduk, an ancient Babylonian deity. Guitarist Morgan Steinmeyer Håkansson formed Marduk with the stated aim of creating what he described as the "most blasphemous band in the world". Guitarist Morgan Steinmeyer Håkansson formed Marduk with the stated aim of creating what he described as the "most blasphemous band in the world". The band's first two releases, the 1991 EP "Fuck Me Jesus" and the 1992 album "Dark Endless", combined black metal with death metal influences. The lineup for these releases consisted of Håkansson, vocalist Andreas "Dread" Axelsson, guitarist Magnus "Devo" Andersson, bassist Rikard Kalm and drummer Joakim "Av Gravf" Göthberg. Dan Swanö of Edge of Sanity mixed both releases. Following "Dark Endless", Axelsson and Kalm left the band. Göthberg became the vocalist, while Roger "B. War" Svensson joined as bassist. This lineup recorded Marduk's second album, "Those of the Unlight", in April 1993, with Swanö again handling the mixing. The album featured a more melodic black metal sound and did not retain the death metal influences of the band's earlier material. Marduk continued in this style with "Opus Nocturne", released on 12 December 1994. The album featured Fredrik Andersson on drums, while Göthberg remained the vocalist. It was the first Marduk album without Magnus Andersson, who had left earlier in 1994. Göthberg left Marduk in 1995, citing boredom as the reason for his departure. He was replaced by Erik "Legion" Hagstedt, formerly of the Swedish black metal band Ophthalamia. Marduk subsequently recorded its fourth full-length album, "Heaven Shall Burn... When We Are Gathered", with Peter Tägtgren at The Abyss Studio in January 1996. The album was released on 1 July 1996. With the exception of drummer Emil Dragutinovic replacing Fredrik Andersson in 2002, the lineup remained largely unchanged during the late 1990s and early 2000s. During this period, Marduk released "Nightwing", "Panzer Division Marduk", "La Grande Danse Macabre" and "World Funeral" between 1998 and 2003. Tägtgren mixed all four albums. Hagstedt left the band in 2003, citing dissatisfaction with its direction and deteriorating personal relationships. Svensson left the following year. Hagstedt was replaced by Daniel "Mortuus" Rostén, known for his work with Funeral Mist, while Magnus Andersson returned to the band. Marduk planned a tour of the United States in September 2016 with Carach Angren, Rotting Christ and Necronomicon, but cancelled the tour because of delays in obtaining visas. In February 2017, a planned performance in Oakland, California, was cancelled by the venue after a local anti-fascist group opposed the band's appearance and reportedly made threats against venue staff. Marduk subsequently toured the United States in summer 2017 with Incantation and Abysmal Dawn. In April 2018, allegations concerning possible neo-Nazi sympathies within the band resurfaced after the news website Dagens ETC reported that Fredrik Widigs and Daniel Rostén had allegedly placed orders through the Nordic Resistance Movement's online shop, based on leaked files said to have originated from the organisation's servers. Marduk denied the allegations and stated that the band had no connection to the Nordic Resistance Movement. Marduk released its twelfth studio album, "Viktoria", on 22 June 2018. Magnus Andersson left the band in 2019 to focus on studio work and was replaced by Joel Lindholm in 2020. Marduk toured the United States with Incantation in early 2023. In May 2023, Lindholm left the band after a video appeared to show him performing a Nazi salute during Marduk's performance at Incineration Fest in London. Håkansson described the incident as "deplorable". The band stated that its members had not been aware of the incident until after the performance and said that Lindholm had been heavily intoxicated and had engaged in several "intolerable stage antics". Marduk was scheduled to perform in Bangkok, Thailand, in 2023 and appeared at Milwaukee Metal Fest in June 2024. Former bassist Roger Svensson died in July 2026.
