Cattle Decapitation is an American deathgrind band formed in San Diego, California, in 1996. The current lineup includes vocalist Travis Ryan, lead guitarist Josh Elmore, drummer Dave McGraw, rhythm guitarist Belisario Dimuzio, and bassist Diego Soria. None of the founding members have remained in the band since 2001. Despite not being part of the original lineup, Ryan and Elmore have appeared on all of the band's eight studio albums.
The band was established in 1996 by Scott Miller on vocals and guitar, Gabe Serbian on drums, and Dave Astor on bass. Their first release was the demo "Ten Torments of the Damned" in 1996. Around 1997, Miller left the group, Serbian moved to guitar while sharing drumming duties with Astor, and Travis Ryan joined as vocalist. In 1999, the band recorded the EP "Human Jerky", followed by "Homovore" in 2000. Both releases were recorded at Double Time Studios with engineer Jeff Forrest. In 2001, Serbian left the band to focus on other projects. Shortly afterward, guitarist Josh Elmore and bassist Troy Oftedal joined, allowing Astor to concentrate solely on drums.
The band's debut studio album, "To Serve Man", was released in 2002. Its graphic cover led to distribution issues in Germany, where a distributor declined to handle the release. In 2003, drummer Dave Astor left and was replaced by Michael Laughlin, who remained until 2008, when Dave McGraw took over the position. The artwork for the 2004 album "Humanure", which depicted a cow excreting human remains, was reportedly censored in some retail contexts, and certain stores declined to display it.
In August 2009, the band parted ways with bassist Troy Oftedal, citing musical and personal differences. The album "Monolith of Inhumanity" was released in 2012 and received generally positive critical reception. The band has toured with various extreme metal acts and participated in events such as Metal Blade Records' Scion A/V Showcase in 2012.
During 2014, the band wrote material for "The Anthropocene Extinction", which was released on August 7, 2015. The track "Manufactured Extinct" was issued in advance of the album. In April 2018, two teenagers were removed from a university tour in Colorado under circumstances that drew public attention; after learning that one of them was wearing the band's merchandise, the group offered them complimentary access to future shows.
In August 2018, bassist Olivier Pinard joined the band, and touring rhythm guitarist Belisario Dimuzio became a full-time member, expanding the group to five members. Recording for the album "Death Atlas" began in May 2019, and it was released on November 29, 2019.
In November 2022, the band announced plans for a new album during a concert performance, where they debuted the song "We Eat Our Young". The album, titled "Terrasite", was released on May 12, 2023.
In April 2025, Olivier Pinard announced his departure from the band to focus on other commitments. In May 2025, a documentary film titled "From This Flesh: A Cattle Decapitation Story" was released, documenting the recording of "Terrasite" and the band's history.
Cattle Decapitation is scheduled to tour in 2026, including appearances at major music festivals in the United States.
