Their recordings combine guitar and bass textures with electronics, programmed percussion and vocals, drawing on drone, doom metal, ambient music, shoegaze and industrial music. The duo and its labels have described this approach as ambient doom, dreamsludge and metalgaze. Their compositions often develop through layers of additional sounds and improvisation around an initial guitar riff and drum-machine pattern.
The name reverses Baker's first name, with “j” replacing “i”, and also references André Breton's novel Nadja.
Their albums include Truth Becomes Death (2005), Radiance of Shadows (2007) and Queller (2014). Luminous Rot (2021), mixed by David Pajo, explored shorter compositions influenced by post-punk, cold wave and industrial music. Labyrinthine (2022) featured four extended tracks with guest vocalists Alan Dubin, Rachel Davies, Lane Shi Otayonii and Dylan Walker.
Nadja has released recordings through labels including Alien8 Recordings, Important Records, Southern Lord and Gizeh Records, as well as its own imprint, Broken Spine Productions. Collaborative releases include recordings with OvO, Pyramids and Fawn Limbs, including the latter collaboration's Vestigial Spectra (2023).
The album cut, released in October 2025, incorporated saxophone, French horn, harp and additional voices alongside the duo's instrumentation. In September 2026, Nadja released Necroausterity (Forever Version), an extended remix of the Dylan Walker-fronted track from Labyrinthine.
