Awareness eventually brings understanding, and understanding destroys fear. And fear is the thing that kills us. So says Nancy Frieko, the Arkansas-born creative visionary behind the band of the same name.

Awareness eventually brings understanding, and understanding destroys fear. And fear is the thing that kills us. So says Nancy Frieko, the Arkansas-born creative visionary behind the band of the same name.
Obsessed with rock from an early age, the mostly self-taught musician plays drums, keys, and anything with strings; she’s also a vocalist, lyricist, and songwriter. Inspired by early favorites such as KISS, her onstage “steampunk” persona developed through a life-long love of glam – her very own real-life anime experiment.
The sound, while reminiscent of PJ Harvey, Chrissie Hynde, a bit Amanda Palmer, is authentic Nancy Frieko, a woman who uses music, not drugs, to attack and destroy both fear and pain. Inversions, counterpoint, odd time… music that suits the writer’s mood, a mood that can go from one place to the next and back again in no time at all. The songs are often autobiographical – even confrontational, bringing obvious but uncomfortable issues to light.
Beneath the flamboyant image is an introspective, intuitive spirit with a hard-earned sense of self, an outspoken advocate for mental health, community and social empowerment. This Southern-bred mezzo-soprano takes the stigma away from mental illness with her voice and words, using deep imagery, metaphor and rhyme. Her lyrics will resonate with anyone looking for meaning and connection, with those willing to listen.
