Vanessa Lee Carlton (born August 16, 1980) is an American singer-songwriter, pianist and actress. Her 2002 debut single "A Thousand Miles" spent 41 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 and received three Grammy nominations, becoming her best-known song. It preceded her debut album "Be Not Nobody", released by A&M Records the same year, which reached number five on the Billboard 200. The album also produced the singles "Ordinary Day" and "Pretty Baby". Her second album, "Harmonium" (2004), also charted on the Billboard 200. Production issues during the album’s development contributed to her departure from A&M Records in 2005.
Carlton released her third album, "Heroes & Thieves" (2007), which had limited commercial performance but received positive critical reception. She independently produced her next two albums, "Rabbits on the Run" (2011) and "Liberman" (2015), both noted for their personal lyrical themes and a shift in musical style. Her sixth studio album, "Love Is an Art", was released in 2020. In 2025, Billboard ranked Carlton among the best female artists of the 21st century. She released her most recent album, "Veils", in 2026.
Outside of music, Carlton made her Broadway debut in a leading role in the Carole King musical "Beautiful" in 2019.
Carlton was born on August 16, 1980, in Milford, Pennsylvania, the first of three children of Edmund "Ed" Carlton, a private jet pilot, and Heidi Lee, a pianist and school music teacher who taught her piano from an early age. She has a sister, Gwen, and a brother, Edmund.
Her mother comes from a Jewish family in Queens, New York. Her maternal grandfather’s surname was originally "Liberman" before it was changed to "Lee" after World War II due to antisemitism. He worked as a painter and shopkeeper in New York. Carlton later named an album and her record label after him.
She showed an early interest in music and reportedly began playing piano by ear at a young age after hearing melodies such as "It's a Small World". As a child, she also trained in ballet, studying under Gelsey Kirkland and Madame Nenette Charisse in New York City, and later enrolled at the School of American Ballet in 1994. During this period she also began writing songs on the piano. She attended the School of American Ballet alongside her academic education and was friends with Julia Stiles during her school years.
Carlton began recording demo material as a teenager. Around this time, she developed the piano motif that later became part of "A Thousand Miles". The song was completed after she was challenged to finish it, and it was inspired by an unnamed student at the Juilliard School, whom she had a crush on.
Her father distributed demo recordings to some of his clients, and one of these recordings reached Ahmet Ertegun, a co-founder of Atlantic Records, who became an early mentor. She graduated from the School of American Ballet in 1998 and later worked in hospitality while performing at small venues. She signed her first publishing deal in her late teens.
In 2001, Carlton met songwriter and producer Peter Zizzo through the New York Songwriters Circle and recorded demo material with him. She was later introduced to Jimmy Iovine, who signed her to A&M Records. After hearing her demo of "A Thousand Miles", label president Ron Fair oversaw the recording and production of the track.
She initially worked on an album project titled "Rinse", which was ultimately not released. Several songs from these sessions were later reworked for "Be Not Nobody". "A Thousand Miles" became a major commercial success and received three Grammy nominations. "Be Not Nobody" was released in April 2002 and sold over one million copies worldwide. Carlton toured extensively in 2002 and 2003, including as an opening act for the Goo Goo Dolls and Third Eye Blind, and also headlined her own tour.
In 2002, she contributed backing vocals to Counting Crows' version of "Big Yellow Taxi". She enrolled at Columbia University in 2003 but left after a short period of study.
"Harmonium" was released in 2004 and debuted at number 33 on the Billboard 200. Its lead single, "White Houses", reached number 86 on the Billboard Hot 100. The music video for the song was edited and later banned by MTV due to lyrical content referencing sexual experience. Carlton also contributed to other artists’ recordings during this period and toured in support of the album before leaving A&M Records in 2005, citing creative differences and label pressure.
"Heroes & Thieves" was released in 2007 after she signed with Murder Inc Records, though she later ended her association with the label. The album’s lead single, "Nolita Fairytale", charted on Billboard’s Adult Top 40.
"Rabbits on the Run" was released in 2011 under Razor & Tie. The album was recorded at Real World Studios in England and drew inspiration from literature and scientific concepts. It was produced by Steve Osborne. Carlton also released the EP "Hear the Bells" in 2011.
"Liberman" was completed in 2014 but released in 2015 through Dine Alone Records following a delay during her pregnancy. The album was preceded by singles including "Blue Pool" and "Willows". It received generally positive reviews. A live album, "Liberman Live", was released in 2016.
From 2017 onwards, Carlton released independent recordings, including live albums and a series of cover songs released throughout 2018, later issued as a compilation on vinyl. In 2019, she made her Broadway debut in "Beautiful", portraying a lead role in a limited engagement.
Her album "Love Is an Art" was released in 2020, co-written with Tristen Gaspadarek. In 2023, a viral video featuring a piano-playing robot puppet performing "A Thousand Miles" circulated online. In 2024, Carlton and her husband John J. McCauley III composed the score for the film "Wish You Were Here", directed by Julia Stiles and released in 2025.
In November 2025, she released the single "Animal", produced by Dave Fridmann, as the lead single from her next album. "Veils" was released in April 2026 through her label Liberman Records, and she appeared as a surprise performer at Coachella the same month.
