Watabou is the solo electronic project from the mind of multi-instrumentalist Rebekah Riott. With her blend of intelligence and raw power, Watabou aims to evoke the emotions of any audience to the utmost, be it through intensive melodies, driving rhythms, powerful words, or any other number of qualities attributed to the act. Watabou’s conception wasn’t one of dedication or seriousness; in fact, being a long time musician, she just wanted to create something that she felt addressed all the strong points of music without all of the downfalls of common bands. After her early success with the idea, Watabou was quick to become a priority among other various musical projects she was involved with at the time. Since then, Watabou has drastically recreated its sound and ideals, which has made it possible to gain attention and performed with several national and internationally renowned artists such as Realicide, Bubblegum Octopus, and Yatagarasu.
In the beginning, though electronic, Watabou was a method of synthesizing realistic instruments in a way that was plausible for one person to perform with in a live setting. As she learned more and more about her style and more about her weaknesses, she began to make up for what she previously lacked, leaving no vulnerabilities for anyone to target, and doing everything possible to create solid electronic music for everyone to enjoy.
Watabou has been commonly described as a “Heavily Psychological and Philosophical musical endeavor” by many in reference to the amount of depth put into each song in order to provoke a specific set of emotions and awareness of those emotions in her listeners. Oftentimes said emotions contrast each other in order to give expose the listener to a new level of depth in pertinence to everyday life, and give people a look at what’s out there for them, no matter who or where they are. Watabou’s foundations now revolve around universal compassion and introducing multiple perspectives to individuals in order for them to better accept one another.
With such an established outlook, as well as a fully developed and individual sound, Watabou has worked with various independent record labels and done split CDs with a number of bands from various locations in order to further spread her message through music. She has no intention of slowing down and the more she learns the greater her message and music will become. As every day passes, Watabou continually grows into something that more and more people enjoy, and that more and more people gain from. Watabou has progressed from something of a pastime to that of a lifestyle.
