Alternative rock/shoegaze/post-grunge band Dig formed in Los Angeles in early 1991, with lead vocalist/guitarist Scott Hackwith, guitarist/backing vocalist Jon Morris, bassist Phil Friedmann, guitarist Johnny Cornwell, and drummer Anthony Smedile. After releasing a demo EP in 1992, the band released a self-titled album in 1993 with producer Dave Jerden. The single Believe spent almost three months in MTV's Buzz Bin, and appeared on various charts. After a rarity EP in 1994, the original lineup splintered as guitarist Cornwell was replaced by Dix Denney (ex-Weirdos and Thelonious Monster member) and drummer Smedile was replaced by Matt Tecu. The band's second album, Defenders of the Universe, appeared in 1996.
After more lineup changes and a third album in 1999, Dig disbanded. Since 2004 however, the band has reunited for various one-off performances, with Hackwith, Morris, and Cornwell in every incarnation of the lineup. Dig released two songs in 2021 which signified their return to the studio.
