Rob Cullivan of the Portland Tribune may have said it best when he simply summed up the sound of Portland-based band John Craig & The Weekend as “extremely catchy, danceable electro-pop.”
Craig’s 2009 debut EP Umlaut (Loophole Records) took indie-pop sensibilities and mashed them with complex electronically dusted arrangements. On the bands recent duel single releases of “Broken Branches” and “Ghosts” b/w “The Fall Out” they continue to expand on Umlaut’s sound with a more experimental multi-layered approach.

For a little backstory... John cut his teeth in the Eugene-based band Tympanic, which he co-founded with his high school buddy, Blind Pilot’s Ryan Dobrowski, during their college days at the University of Oregon. Tympanic toured up and down the West Coast throughout college before the band went their separate ways upon graduation.
Always busy in the Portland music scene, previous bands have given way to The Weekend, as well as Craig’s current parallel project Search Party, which has recently released their debut full-length Deturn. The LP has received critical acclaim from the Portland Mercury, Willamette Week and Portland Tribune.
Constantly writing, Craig has discovered a way to creatively balance his ideas between the electro-pop of his solo project and the more classic power-trio rock of Search Party.
Umlaut’s first single “Ticking” is currently being featured on Portland’s 94.7 KNRK and 101.9 KINK. “Soon” was tapped for inclusion in the feature film “Tucker & Dale vs. Evil” (a 2010 Sundance Film Festival & SXSW Muisc & Film Festival selection). An instrumental version of Umlaut’s “Choose Me (Heather’s Song) was also used in the promotional Obama video ”Heal This Nation” released in October 2008. “Ticking” is currently being featured in the Tommy Hilfiger national (on-line & in-store) ad campaign “Meet The Hilfigers,” which runs from August 2010 - August 2011.
The band is currently recording their full-length debut in Portland. The album is slated for a summer 2011 release.
